Pre-Health Professions Timeline

Senior Year in High School
- Take advanced English, science and math.
- Apply for financial aid.
- Graduate from a Texas high school.
- Have the required SAT/ACT scores (varies by year).
- Enroll in a Texas public institution of higher education or participating private institution.
- Seek advice from pre-health advisors.
Freshman Year at ASU
- Enroll in at least 15 credit hours, including biology and chemistry courses.
- Attend the fall pre-health orientation to learn what you need to do to be a competitive applicant.
- Get involved on campus in extracurricular activities.
- Start consistently “helping” people.
- Maintain a high GPA (no less than 3.5).
- Read about current events, medical current events, managed care and other health-related topics.
Sophomore Year at ASU
- Continue extracurricular, people-helping and other activities.
- Start shadowing professionals in your desired field in the spring/summer.
- Read about current events, medical current events, managed care and other health-related topics.
- Start working on your personal statement.
- Consider studying abroad, research or a summer internship.
- Start exploring hot topics in medicine and know the pros and cons of your field.
Junior Year at ASU
- Continue extracurricular, people-helping and other activities.
- Continue shadowing all year.
- Continue reading about current events, medical current events, managed care and other health-related topics.
- Continue working on your personal statement.
- Consider studying abroad, research or a summer internship.
- Keep exploring hot topics in medicine and know the pros and cons of your field.
- Inform the HPAC chairman of your intent to apply.
- Submit required materials to the HPAC chairman.
- Study and take the required entrance exam(s).
- Meet with the Health Professions Advisory Committee, practice your interviewing skills, receive feedback and obtain your Health Professions Evaluation (HPE), a necessary component of the application process.
- APPLY to health professions schools through the Texas Medical and Dental School Application Service (TMDSAS), Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA) or similar service, depending on your field.
- Interview at health professions schools.
Senior Year at ASU
- Continue health professions interviews.
- Continue extracurricular and other activities as well as shadowing.
- Complete all degree plan requirements and graduate (JAMP students must graduate in four years).
- Get accepted/matched into a health professions school.
