Pre-Health Professions Timeline

Please note this is not a complete list. See your advisor for more information.

Senior Year in High School

  1. Take advanced English, science and math.
  2. Apply for financial aid.
  3. Graduate from a Texas high school.
  4. Have the required SAT/ACT scores (varies by year).
  5. Enroll in a Texas public institution of higher education or participating private institution.
  6. Seek advice from pre-health advisors.

Freshman Year at ASU

  1. Enroll in at least 15 credit hours, including biology and chemistry courses.
  2. Attend the fall pre-health orientation to learn what you need to do to be a competitive applicant.
  3. Get involved on campus in extracurricular activities.
  4. Start consistently “helping” people.
  5. Maintain a high GPA (no less than 3.5).
  6. Read about current events, medical current events, managed care and other health-related topics.

Sophomore Year at ASU

  1. Continue extracurricular, people-helping and other activities.
  2. Start shadowing professionals in your desired field in the spring/summer.
  3. Read about current events, medical current events, managed care and other health-related topics.
  4. Start working on your personal statement.
  5. Consider studying abroad, research or a summer internship.
  6. Start exploring hot topics in medicine and know the pros and cons of your field.

Junior Year at ASU

  1. Continue extracurricular, people-helping and other activities.
  2. Continue shadowing all year.
  3. Continue reading about current events, medical current events, managed care and other health-related topics.
  4. Continue working on your personal statement.
  5. Consider studying abroad, research or a summer internship.
  6. Keep exploring hot topics in medicine and know the pros and cons of your field.
  7. Inform the HPAC chairman of your intent to apply.
  8. Submit required materials to the HPAC chairman.
  9. Study and take the required entrance exam(s).
  10. Meet with the Health Professions Advisory Committee, practice your interviewing skills, receive feedback and obtain your Health Professions Evaluation (HPE), a necessary component of the application process.
  11. APPLY to health professions schools through the Texas Medical and Dental School Application Service (TMDSAS), Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA) or similar service, depending on your field.
  12. Interview at health professions schools.

Senior Year at ASU

  1. Continue health professions interviews.
  2. Continue extracurricular and other activities as well as shadowing.
  3. Complete all degree plan requirements and graduate (JAMP students must graduate in four years).
  4. Get accepted/matched into a health professions school.
