Flynn's Research Philosophy
Undergraduate research is a two way street:
- I provide the expertise, direction, initial literature findings
and experiment development
- You provide some of the innovation, literature review and initial
analysis
- This is independent research; you are not a mindless drone working
for the purpose of working
Research Advisor Philosophy
- The research advisor should help students develop posters,
presentations or research articles
- The research advisor should act in the capacity of editor and not
writer
- The research advisor should not place words in student's mouths
- The research advisor is there for the advancement of the student
and not vice versa
- Finally: The student should understand their research project well enough
to talk about it to a scientist
Research project requirements
- A minimum of 3 hours of work per week per 1 hour credit of
research is required
- A little more work is normally required for a publication or
presentation
- The final written report must be submitted and this will be kept on
file
- Research hours may not be stockpiled but are flexible
- Research is not an automatic "A" if you are taking CHEM 4191, 4192 or 4193
- The ultimate goal of a research project is for a publication or contributing authorship
though some research projects may not be able to produce this
