Future Students
This page contains important information for students that want to get a chemistry or biochemistry major but do not know what school they want to get it from.
Why Angelo State University?
At ASU you are going to get one of the best educational returns for the money that you spend. If you compare our tuition and fees to other universities, you will quickly see that ASU is very affordable. Okay, so that just tells you we are affordable right?
What type of "educational return" will you get from ASU? How about small class sizes, professors that hold 10 office hours a week, excellent scholarship opportunities, outstanding undergraduate research opportunities and affordable living expenses. If you are looking at professional schools, we have one of the highest acceptance rates to medical, allied health and graduate schools in Texas, particularly in the sciences.
Why our department?
So your next question is why should you get your chemistry or biochemistry degree at Angelo State University? The emphasis in our department is on quality education for undergraduate students. Many of our professors offer review sessions for tests, our American Chemical Society club offers tutoring for freshman chemistry and we have an Electron Pushing Club that supports our organic chemistry instruction. In our department, we also stress the importance of the scientific method as well as the application of course materials to real-life situations as much as possible.
It would be hard for you to find another group of chemistry and biochemistry faculty that are more dedicated to the success of their students. A very common compliment that we receive from our students is that we are always willing to go the extra mile to make sure that students learn the material in our courses. Since our class sizes are relatively small, this enables us to get to know students better and therefore our letters of recommendation are very strong because we simply know the capabilities of our students so well.
Our teaching component is supported through faculty research activities. One of the best ways to learn science is to do research and, believe us, there are plenty of opportunities to do research in our department. This past academic year alone, we had eleven students present their research at scientific symposia. That is close to 25% of our total chemistry and biochemistry majors that presented in one year alone. If you consider that most students do not start participating in research until the end of their sophomore year this figure becomes even more impressive.
