Studying chemistry or biochemistry at Angelo State University will put you on the path to a very successful career. The field of chemistry has specific disciplines that include organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry. Biochemistry, on the other hand, is a very broad discipline that investigates the chemical nature of life and this includes the study of the structure, chemical processes and development of biological systems in organisms.
The chemistry degree program emphasizes the physical principles behind chemical processes while the biochemistry degree program focuses on the biological aspects of these very same processes. The first and second year of both programs provide a very strong foundation in chemistry, physics and mathematics with biochemistry placing an additional emphasis on biology. Students in their third year start to specialize in their respective majors. Many chemistry and biochemistry students take advantage of both our research facilities and research scholarship opportunities to conduct a research project during their junior or senior years.
The practical applications of chemistry and biochemistry can be seen on a daily basis in the world that surrounds you. The clothes you wear, the foods you eat and the medicines that keep you healthy have all been touched by these two disciplines. Chemists and biochemists work in a variety of career fields, including medicine, agriculture, manufacturing and basic research. Due to the strong disciplined background in science offered by these degree programs, our students have been extremely successful in their applications to graduate, medical and professional schools.
