Science Days
Director: Dr. Nick Flynn
The Science Days program provides fourth-grade elementary students with the opportunity to experience science in an educational setting. It is the goal of this program to get students interested in the sciences early since studies indicate that once students reach the upper elementary grade, it is much harder to stimulate their interest in the sciences. To assure that these students experience the most out of this opportunity, four science departments at Angelo State University are participating in this program. The four science departments that participate in Science Days are Biology, Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry/Biochemistry.
In the Science Days program, students are exposed to the Biology Department's Natural History collections. These collections demonstrate the variety of wildlife that can be found in the region area surrounding San Angelo. Students are also given the opportunity to participate in some hands-on science demonstrations that provide them with a greater, and more compelling, perspective on the sciences. A geology demonstration teaches students about different types of volcanic eruptions as well as different types of rocks. Students are also shown some interesting and engaging math activities. A chemistry and physics magic show is also provided to students to demonstrate more concepts in chemistry and physics. These concepts are explained at a level that the students can appreciate and understand.
