Department of Curriculum and Instruction

Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction

The Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction is a degree with an option to apply to the Educator Preparation Program for Teacher Certification. The certification program is designed for those who have a bachelor's degree and are interested in teaching. You must have a bachelor’s degree with 24 hours in a Texas public school teaching field to begin the process.

You will need to take the content area certification tests prior to starting your internship. The available tests, dates of the next tests and preparatory materials can be found at texes.ets.org . The initial classes start June 2008 beginning with Summer I. You will be taking 2 of the required courses in a web-blended format. Two weeks in June you will be on campus attending class Monday – Friday 9-3 pm followed by an online component.

During Summer II you will be taking the 2 additional courses online. The courses are taught together to provide a smooth transition from one context to the next.

Once you finish the 4 summer courses and pass the content area test, you may qualify for your Texas Probationary Teaching Certificate. After you find a teaching position in a Texas school district, you can
qualify for a Probationary Certificate to complete the one-year internship. Once you complete the one-year internship and pass all certification tests (content area and pedagogy) the probationary status may be removed.

While completing your internship, you will also take classes in the Fall and Spring Semesters to guide, develop and support your instructional skills. These classes are a part of the Master's degree plan.

Additionally, once you have a Texas Teaching Certificate you may be able to add additional areas by passing additional tests.
