Master of Education in Guidance & Counseling

The Master of Education in Guidance & Counseling program is designed for those who are interested in pursuing a career as a public school counselor. Persons receiving this degree will be eligible to take the Texas Examination of Educator Standards in Texas (TExES) for the Professional Certificate for School Counselors. The student must complete a minimum of 36 semester credit hours (sch) of graduate work, including all academic requirements for the Professional Certificate for School Counselors.

Prior to being eligible for the School Counselor Certificate, the individual must submit proof of two years classroom teaching experience.


Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction

The Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction is a degree program with an option to apply to the Educator Preparation Program for Teacher Certification. The certification program is designed for those who have a bachelor's degree and are interested in teaching. You must have a bachelor's degree with 24 hours in Texas public school teaching field to begin the process.

To apply for the Probabtionary Texas Teacher Certification, the candidate must (1) complete the cohort summer courses with a grade of B or above and (2) pass the appropriate content area test. As a requirement for the degree the candidate is required to successfully present an electronic portfolio to a committee of Department of Curriculum & Instruction professors.

Master of Education in School Administration (Principal)

The Master of Education in School Administration program is designed for those who are interested in pursuing a career as a public school administrator. Persons receiving this degree will be eligible to take the Texas Examination of Educator Standards in Texas (TExES) for the Professional Certificate for Principals.

Students who have received the Professional Certificate for Principals are eligible for the Superintendency Cohort program at ASU. Contact the Education office for more information.The student must complete a minimum of 39 semester credit hours of graduate work, including all academic requirements, and must submit proof of two years of classroom teaching experience to be eligible for the Principal TExES.

This program prepares the graduate student for higher education leadership positions in the nonacademic arena of college campuses, such as career services, enrollment management, residence life, or student development. Graduates may find employment in a variety of different settings from community colleges to research universities, and they will be prepared to matriculate in a doctoral level program.The student must complete a minimum of 36 semester credit hours (sch) of graduate work.

Principal Certification

Students who already have a Master's degree can be placed on a certification plan in order to complete the requirements for Principal Certification. The plan will list the courses the student needs to complete for certification purposes. The student will receive certification after successfully completing the coursework and passing the Superintendent TExES examination. Please contact the program adviser for more information.

Superintendent Certification
Adviser: Dr. Lu Stephens

In addition to graduate school entrance requirements and department requirements, the individual seeking admission to the Superintendent Certificate Program must hold the Principal's Certificate or its equivalent. The Superintendent Certificate Program is organized around an online format. The online coursework is supplemented by working with a local superintendent in your area. A practicum is required. After completing the required course work listed below, individuals must receive a passing score on the Superintendent TExES.
