Prior to entering the field of education, Dr. Summerlin served twenty years in the U.S. Air Force, with tours in the United Kingdom, Germany, Turkey, Spain, and Korea. Following his military career, Dr. Summerlin spent eight years as a systems engineer in the electronics industry living in Silicon Valley and Austin, Texas.

To begin his career in education, Dr. Summerlin taught mathematics and physics in Schertz-Cibolor-Universal City ISD and Northside ISD in Helotes, Texas. As an adjunct professor, he taught mathematics at Northwest Vista College in San Antonio and graduate level education courses at Schreiner University. Later he taught at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas and served there as Director of Teacher Education, certification officer, and department chair.
