Dr. Lu Anna Stephens
Dr. Lu Anna Stephens, known as "Dr. Lu" to everyone, came to Angelo State University in the fall of 2004 from Texas Woman's University in Denton. She arrived at ASU with experience in teaching all levels of Education courses, but with expertise in principal training and superintendent certification areas. Dr. Lu teaches in several program areas at ASU, including principal master's level and superintendent certification. She also works with the Texas Education Agency in an advisory capacity relating to unacceptable schools. Dr. Stephens developed the online certification program which began in the fall of 2005. This is a new effort for ASU and the first time the superintendent courses are being offered totally by distance learning. This program has become the largest superintendent online program in Texas.
Dr. Stephens has a rich background in public schools. She has served as a teacher, counselor, assistant principal, dean of instruction, elementary/middle school/high school/magnet school principal, deputy superintendent, assistant superintendent, superintendent of schools, and director of instructional services at the Region XI Service Center. She was attached to the Governor's Office and was director for home schooling/grants/initiatives/math and science initiatives with the Govermor and at Texas Education Agency in Austin. Dr. Lu also worked for the Commissioner of Education. Her job was to develop agendas for monthly meetings with superintendents and another set of meetings with service center directors, as well as attending all State Board meetings. Dr. Lu also has held adjunct positions at Texas Christian University, University of Texas at Arlington, and Sul Ross University.
Dr. Stephens has been awarded many honors from the state, regional, and district level for outstanding leadership. She is involved in service to the community and to education with a focus always on the students.
