Host Family Program Application

Dear Friends of Angelo State University,

Our program matches ASU international students with host families in San Angelo. Students live on campus, so they don’t live with host families, but the families are involved in several other aspects of their lives during their time in San Angelo.

Married or single people are welcome to be host families. You do not have to be a graduate of ASU to participate, but we would be happy to have you join the Alumni Association as a friend of ASU, if you wish.

Basic host family responsibilities include:

  • Corresponding with your student and the student’s family before his/her arrival, if possible.
  • Meet and greet your student when he/she arrives at the airport and help with settling into an apartment or residence hall.
  • Invite your student to your home at least monthly during the semester for lunch or dinner, or take him/her out to a community event.
  • If you will be in town, invite your student to be with your family for any holidays and celebrate your student’s birthday, if applicable.
  • Attend special international student-sponsored events, if possible.
  • Expose your student to as much “Texas culture” as possible.

These students typically have high academic standing. We have had great reviews from students and families about this program.
The students come from various countries, including Germany, Scotland, France, India, China, Bulgaria, Russia, Zimbabwe, Trinidad, Bangladesh, Mexico, Nigeria, Estonia and more. Some are here only one semester while others are here from one to several years. Some are older graduate students and others are freshmen. You can see photographs and read more about the program on the ASU International Student Association website.

The cultural interaction between these students and their host families is a great enhancement to ASU’s International Studies program and to San Angelo as a community. The majority of our students arrive for the fall semester, but we usually have a small number arrive in January as well. We try to match the host families as soon as we hear from the students.

If you are interested in becoming a host family, please reply by giving us some personal information on the form below.

Thank you for your prompt reply and your interest. New students arrive each semester, and we begin the process of matching students with families as soon as we have information on both. We usually plan a big get-acquainted Pot-Luck Supper in August just before school starts with all students and host families, as well as a Christmas party and spring party. These students are a lot of fun, and you won't regret your commitment.

Thanks again,
Barbara Rallo
