New Zealand and Australia 2010
Introduction
The 2010 study abroad program to New Zealand and Australia will provide professional growth opportunities for teachers, prospective teachers and administrators. This is an opportunity for the participants to:
- Visit two countries that have outstanding international recognition for superior education.
- Study the organization and administration of the educational systems of New Zealand and Australia and compare these systems with the educational system in Texas.
- Directly study the teaching practices and student services provided in schools of both nations and compare these with the teaching practices and student services provided in Texas schools.
- Attend the World Congress on Reading in Auckland.

Courses
ISTD 3381: Special Topics in Interdisciplinary Studies - A Study of Education and Teaching in New Zealand, Australia and Texas. This course includes a four-week travel abroad experience involving a trip to Australia and New Zealand with mandatory pre-class meetings. An emphasis is on the comparative study of the education systems, meeting the needs of a diversity of students, teaching and curriculum aspects. This program will examine the influence of the culture on the education systems of Australia and New Zealand. Students will participate in a variety of planned experiences to key cultural exhibits to gain a deeper understanding of the history and culture of Australia and New Zealand.
ISTD 3381: Special Topics in Interdisciplinary Studies - Culture, Diversity, Teaching and Learning in Australia, New Zealand and Texas. This course includes a four-week travel abroad experience involving a trip to Australia and New Zealand with mandatory pre-class meetings. Itinerary
The program schedule will be available as soon as details are formalized. The schedule is subject to revision as additional details of the travel schedules, excursions and special arrangements for meetings with business, government and university representatives are developed in consultation with faculty and administrative officers of the host university.
All program participants must have adequate health and accident insurance coverage in case of emergencies or other medical needs. Students will be required to obtain International Student Identification Cards that will provide medical, death and discount benefits. Participants must provide the directors with a copy of the policy number and company name of their insurance policy.
Student Eligibility
Undergraduate Students:
- Must be a full-time ASU student for two consecutive semesters at time of application
- Must have completed 30 hours of course work at time of application
- Must have cumulative GPA of 2.75
Graduate Students:
- Current students must have GPA of 3.0
- Newly accepted student must have undergraduate GPA of 2.75
- Transfer students must have GPA of 3.0
Faculty Leadership
The program will be directed by Dr. Linda Lucksinger and Dr. Leeann Moore, associate professors of teacher education. Both directors have extensive travel experience, including international travel.
Lucksinger is head of the Teacher Education Department and has previously led study abroad trips to Germany. Moore has experience traveling within both New Zealand and Australia.
