Introduction
The 2012 ASU Summer Student Exchange Program with Dongguk University in Seoul and Gyeongju, Korea, will be conducted from July 6 through August 6, 2012. The program will provide 20 students a unique opportunity to combine a concise but intensive cultural immersion experience with a comprehensive, hands–on, insider’s view of the major components of the Criminal Justice System in Korea. Participating students will gain a basic understanding of Korean culture and social institutions, successfully developing and acquiring cultural competence and interaction skills with Korean people. Within this context, the two primary course objectives are to understand the similarities and differences between the Criminal Justice Systems in Korea and the United States and to develop multiculturalism.
Founded in 1906, Dongguk University is a private, coeducational university in Korea. Students and professors from around the globe enhance the quality of education on each of Dongguk’s four campuses (Seoul, Gyeongju and Ilsan in Korea and L.A. in the U.S.) by providing a world-class education that bridges East and West on many levels. In addition, it operates two affiliated hospitals of Western medicine, and four of Oriental medicine, a generic term which includes Traditional Korean medicine studies. Through the international perspective, the course makes comprehensive and useful comparison and contrast of both countries’ criminal justice system and practices in order for participating students to draw both provincial and universal benefits, leading to more efficient and effective criminal justice system and practices in the U.S. Instructor: Dr. Won-Jae Lee.
ISTD 3381: Multiculturalism in Criminal Justice. The course is designed to provide students with multicultural learning and activities which are designed to be aware of and understand cultural differences, and respect those of different background, purposely developing the premise that greater cross cultural and social competency must be a key objective of criminal justice services for multicultural communities in the U.S., a country often referred as a melting pot. Faculty Leadership
The program will be coordinated and directed by Dr. Won-Jae Lee, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and member of the International Education Committee. Since 2002, he has been actively an international bridge between American criminal justice academia and field and their Korean counterparts. Here at Angelo State University, he has served as a planner and coordinator for two visiting scholars from the Korean Ministry of Justice and has served as a committee member to initiate and to develop our first ELLI program. Since January 2009, he, as a planner and coordinator, had six month preparation for a trip to Korea (with Meghan Pace, International Student Services Counselor of the ASU Center for International Studies). He attended the 29th Fall Korean Student Fairs in Seoul and Pusan, Korea held on Sep 24, 26, and 27, 2009. Also, he visited 3 universities (Dongguk University, Kyungnam University and University of Ulsan) and participated official meetings to discuss sister school relations and international programs with ASU. These international efforts successfully laid the firm foundations of ASU’s exchange programs, dual degree programs, and international summer programs with the Korean Universities. These extensive and consistent international recruiting efforts have led to the registration and visit of over 100 Korean students to ASU.
