ASU’s Department of Teacher Education will prepare you for a rewarding career in elementary or middle school education. You may recall a teacher who made a difference in your life – life changing teachers – that is the type of teachers we strive to produce. Our goal is to provide you with the knowledge and skills that will allow you to make a positive impact on the lives of your future students.
You will spend a great deal of time in real classroom settings prior to student teaching as you observe and begin teaching short, specific content focussed lessons. Then during student teaching, your time will be spent in actual classrooms with real-world responsibilities. Experienced classroom teachers and university supervisors will guide and mentor you through teaching in front of a class, creating and delivering lessons plans, and demonstrating your skills with technology and multimedia presentations as you gain real-world experience.
Our department has access to the Innovative Teaching Center, a classroom with state-of-the-art teaching and learning technology. Additionally, each classroom used for teacher preparation courses has multimedia technology that exposes you to the tools needed to effectively teach and communicate with today’s students.
Our full-time faculty hold doctorates and are experienced educators. They stay current in their areas of expertise, are active in grant-funded programs and research, and provide professional development opportunities for area and regional schools and teachers. They care deeply about you as a student and desire to develop lasting relationships with you beyond graduation.
Strong Job Outlook
Our Teacher Education students have a consistently high pass rate on state teacher certification exams. Job placement for our graduates is also favorable, and the U.S. Department of Labor reports that employment opportunities for teachers are expected to increase over the next few years.
