Dr. Deborah Anne Banker

Dr. Linda Lucksinger

Dr. Banker, assistant professor of special education in the Department of Teacher Education, is brand-new to ASU this fall 2010.

Dr. Banker is originally from Philadelphia, Pa., but moved to Texas to attend college. She earned a B.S. in physics from the University of Houston and spent the next 20 years working in industry and co-owned an environmental/industrial laboratory. As a result of having adopted a child with special needs, she went back to school and earned a master’s degree in special education with a specialization in educational diagnostics from the University of Texas at Brownsville and then continued on to earn a Doctorate of Education in teacher education from the University of Houston.

Before coming to ASU, Dr. Banker was at the University of North Carolina Pembroke for two years, where she served as the program coordinator for the special education program teaching undergraduate and graduate courses. While there, she was in charge of redesigning the special education program to meet the new state standards and taking the whole program to online instruction. Before that, she served for four years as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Brownsville for the special education program.

During her career, Dr. Banker spent 12 years in Texas schools in grades 7-12. Besides teaching and being certified in math, science and special education, she developed an inclusive program for students with mild to moderate disabilities for a private school.

In her spare time, Dr. Banker enjoys reading, knitting, taking care of the family pets and spending time on “the ranch” in deep South Texas.
