Dr. Hakes is a Professor of Education in the Department of Teacher Education and currently teaches reading courses, multicultural education, social studies methods, and graduate courses.

An experienced teacher in public elementary schools, universities and government-funded programs with Native Americans, Dr. Hakes received her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her fields of study include elementary education, reading, children's literature, multicultural education, social studies and Native American education. She has conducted and published research in the areas of reading, mathematics, social studies, children's literature, technology, science and curriculum. In addition, Dr. Hakes has presented this field research and teaching techniques at major national conventions as well as international conferences. An accomplished musician, artist and wood carver, Dr. Hakes carved the University Mace. She enjoys performing in musical groups, constructing musical instruments including violins, playing the hammered dulcimer, cooking, reading, knitting, traveling, sewing, writing and rescuing Chihuahuas.
