Dr. Christine Purkiss
Dr. Purkiss specializes in science education, especially at the elementary level, and is interested in the use of science notebooks to enhance student literacy. She believes that teaching inquiry methods in science is of the utmost importance if students are to learn 21st century skills. She comes to ASU with 18 years of teaching experience in higher education and public schools. In her dissertation “Exploring the Perceptions of Middle School Students in an integrative Environment: A Case Study”, Dr. Purkiss conducted a case study that looked at an alternative form of curriculum for middle school students.
Dr. Purkiss is a past recipient of a Teaching Excellence Award from West Texas A&M University and has been a member of both state textbook reviews and standards setting committees in Texas and Colorado. She is a past president of the Colorado Association of Science Teachers and is a reviewer for the National Science Teachers Association middle school journal Science Scope.
Dr. Purkiss received her EdD from Texas Tech University in December 2000.
