Dr. Marva Solomon

My name is Marva Solomon, and I teach in the reading area of the Teacher Preparation Program. I am returning to West Texas after many years in the Austin area.

I was born in Abilene, but moved several times as a child because my dad was in the Air Force. I studied mass communications at Texas Tech University with a specialization in journalism. I also got my elementary teacher certification from Texas Tech.

Shortly after moving to Austin to teach elementary school, I earned a master’s degree in English from the University of Texas at Austin. However, my many years in the classroom convinced me to study language and literacy for my Ph.D.

My research interests are in young children’s literacy learning, particularly in diverse classrooms. I love learning and reporting the important things children have to teach us. I am interested in young children using technology as a literacy tool. I have a published chapter in the book Teaching the New Writing: Technology, Change and Assessment in 21st Century Classroom by Herrington, Hodgson and Moran. My chapter is called “True Adventures of Students Writing Online: Mummies, Vampires and Schnauzers, On My!”
