Degree Programs

The graduate faculty in the Teacher Education Department are actively involved in research, development of new pre-service teacher education models and in-service education programs throughout the region.

The Teacher Education Department offers these graduate degree programs:

Master of Education in Educational Diagnostics

Adviser: Dr. Mary Sanders
The Master of Education in Educational Diagnostics program is designed for students interested in pursuing careers as public school diagnosticians. Upon completing this degree, students are eligible to take the Texas Examination of Educator Standards (TExES) for the Professional Certificate for Educational Diagnosticians. Students must complete a minimum of 39 semester credit hours of graduate work, including all academic requirements for the Professional Certificate for Educational Diagnosticians. To be eligible for the certificate, students must submit proof of two years of classroom teaching experience.

Master of Education – Reading Specialist

Adviser: Dr. Ann Bullion-Mears
This program is designed for students interested in pursuing careers as public school reading specialists. Upon completing this degree, students are eligible to take the Texas Examination for the Certification of Educators in Texas (ExCET) for the Professional Certificate for Reading Specialists. Students must complete a minimum of 36 semester credit hours of graduate work and must submit proof of two years of classroom teaching experience to be eligible for the Reading Specialist ExCET.

Master Reading Teacher Certification Program

Adviser: Dr. Ann Bullion-Mears
Students seeking a Master Reading Teacher (MRT) Certificate must hold a valid Texas Teacher Certificate, complete the required courses and receive a passing score on the Master Reading Teacher TExES. With regular admission to the graduate program, these courses can be applied to the Reading Specialist degree. Students planning to take the Master Reading Teacher TExES exam will need to complete four required graduate-level reading courses and have had three years of teaching experience.

Note: The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers graduate programs for students interested in guidance counseling and school administration.
