Graduate Teacher Education
Degree Programs
The graduate faculty in the Department of Teacher Education are actively involved in research, development of new pre-service teacher education models and in-service education programs throughout the region. Before students can be accepted into any Teacher Education graduate or certificate program, they must first apply for admission through the College of Graduate Studies.
The Department of Teacher Education offers these graduate degree programs:
Master Reading Teacher Certification Program
Advisor: Dr. Ann Bullion-Mears
Students seeking a Master Reading Teacher (MRT) Certificate must hold a valid Texas Teacher Certificate, complete the required courses and receive a passing score on the Master Reading Teacher TExES. With regular admission to the graduate program, these courses can be applied to the Reading Specialist degree. Students planning to take the Master Reading Teacher TExES exam will need to complete four required graduate-level reading courses and have had three years of teaching experience.
Master of Education in Special Education
Advisor: Dr. Richard Evans
The Master of Education in Special Education program was developed in response to the current teacher shortage in special education (including the areas of secondary core subjects, dyslexia and behavior management) in Texas and other states. This new program allows ASU to offer a Masters in Special Education in an area of need and interest.
Certification in Special Education
Advisor: Dr. Richard Evans
Add-on special education certification options are available for diagnosticians. This program is for people not certified in the field of special education and provides a flexible way to add supplemental special education certification to their current teacher credentials. For others, the program provides areas of focus as options to add to their current teacher certificate. The first two local certificates in the program are a Dyslexia Certificate and a Behavior Certificate. Each certificate program is 15 SCH (five courses) of special education graduate course work that focuses on exploring, evaluating, and developing teacher skills for individuals with special needs. These new certificate options will better meet the current and future needs of practicing teachers who wish to add to their skills and knowledge.
Master of Education in Professional Education
Advisor: Dr. Donna Gee

Course work will meet the needs of practicing teachers who wish to add to their skills and knowledge. The program is offered through mostly Web-blended courses (online activities and at least three face-to-face meetings during the semester) as well as some Web-based courses to provide candidates with the experience of working with and learning from ASU Department of Teacher Education faculty.
Graduate Level Initial Teacher Certification for Elementary Education
Advisor: Dr. Donna Gee
For those who already have a baccalaureate degree who are interested in becoming a certified teacher, this program provides the needed coursework for Early Childhood to Grade 6 (EC-6) Generalist certification. The program is offered through Web-blended courses (online activities and at least three face-to-face meetings during the semester) as well as some Web-based courses to provide candidates with flexibility and the experience of working with and learning from ASU Department of Teacher Education faculty.
