English

Maybe you want to study great literature. Perhaps you desire a career in teaching English. Maybe you want to become a technical or business writer. Perhaps you aspire to be a poet or novelist. No matter your interests, you will find your niche in ASU’s Department of English.

Range of Skills

Faculty in the English Department help students improve their skills in clear writing, analytical thinking and literary interpretation. Student organizations sponsor social activities and nurture the aspirations of developing writers and teachers.

Published Work

The department’s annual literary and artistic magazine, Oasis, offers students experience in editing and design. The call for submissions occurs each fall, and students may submit their own writing, photography or graphic art.

Prolific Faculty Writers

Our faculty members practice what they teach. They write for publication, edit professional journals and present their scholarship at conferences. Several faculty members also edit the Concho River Review, a semi-annual literary journal published by ASU.

Career Opportunities

A bachelor’s degree in English opens the doors to a wide array of careers. In addition to offering a teacher certification option, our department has a technical and business writing specialization. Other graduates go on to be editors, journalists, research analysts and publishers. Many go on to graduate school.
