Application Procedures and Schedule of Deadlines for Graduate and Teaching Assistants
Graduate Assistant
Qualifications: B.A. degree, including 24 semester hours in English, 12 of these in advanced courses, with an acceptable grade point average (3.0 or better). Admission to the Graduate Program. (All teaching assistants are required to take English 6376.)
Application Process: All materials must be addressed to Dr. Nancy Allen, Head, Department of English, #10894 ASU Station, San Angelo TX, 76909. You must submit the following items:
- A cover letter, addressed to Dr. Nancy Allen, which indicates your interest in and reasons for applying for a graduate assistantship.
- An application form. These forms are available in the English Department office and in the Graduate School.
- Three letters of reference sent directly to Dr. Nancy Allen from persons familiar with your work and record, such as faculty members with whom you have worked. Note: The interview committee consists of Dr. Nancy Allen, Dr. Jeffery Schonberg, Dr. Terry Dalrymple, and Dr. Lauri Dietz. As such, they are not eligible to submit letters of recommendation.
Deadlines: Application materials should be received in the English Department by the first Friday in April. Qualified applicants will be asked to schedule an interview. Successful applicants will be informed by the Dean of the Graduate School. If supplemental funds become available, some assistantships may be awarded later in the year.
Renewals: Renewals are subject to approval each year. Application for renewal of a graduate assistantship will be made by means of a letter of intent submitted to the head of the English Department by the first Friday in April.
Teaching Assistant
Qualifications: Admission to the Graduate Program. Completion of 18 semester hours in graduate English courses. Some teaching experience or the completion of English 6378, Teaching College Composition. (All graduate and teaching assistants are required to take English 6376.)
