Overview

Earth System Science for Elementary Teachers (ESSET) is a sustained high-quality professional development program in climate literacy and best practices in teaching science. Designed for elementary teachers in grades K-5, the four-semester program is offered at no cost to participants and includes:

  • High quality, sustained professional development
  • Six graduate credit hours (tuition and fees paid for by the grant)
    • Spring 2013 – Eight-week online course (March 18-May 10)
    • Summer 2013 – Three-week summer workshop on the ASU campus (July 15-Aug. 2). The workshop includes working with K-5 students in a climate camp to pilot activities created during the workshop.
    • Fall 2013 – Implementation of curriculum into classrooms
    • Spring 2014 – Conference on the ASU campus to share ideas and activities
  • Classroom resources and equipment
    • GLOBE program
    • Classroom weather station
  • Personal laptop computer
  • Room and board at ASU for summer program, if appropriate
  • Connection to professionals in climate literacy from the National Weather Service and The Weather Channel
