Graduate Application Process for Hill Country Students
Hill Country graduate students follow the same application process as students at ASU’s main campus. Read the information below or get more detailed information using the application links in the menu on the left.
Application Instructions
The ASU College of Graduate Studies seeks applications from candidates with strong academic preparation, leadership potential and a demonstrated commitment to education. Some students seek admission immediately after completing an undergraduate degree, while others attend ASU after time spent in the work force. The diversity of background and experience within the student body provides a rich dimension for classroom interactions.
Application Process
A completed application consists of the following:
- Graduate Application for Admission Form
- $40 application fee (nonrefundable) – or – $50 (U.S. Dollars) for international applicants
- Official Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score, if applicable
- Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended (except Angelo State University). To be considered official, the transcript must be mailed from the registrar’s office of the issuing university directly to the ASU College of Graduate Studies. Transcripts that are hand carried or mailed by the student will not be accepted as official, but may be used for evaluation purposes.
- Transcripts must include certification of a completed baccalaureate or higher degree from a college or university with substantially similar degree requirements as Angelo State University (except applicants to the RN-M.S.N. program, for whom admission is possible after completing at least 90 undergraduate semester hours).
- (Degree-seeking students only) An essay of no more than 500 words (typed in 12- point type with one-inch margins) that describes your educational plans, career objectives, commitment to your particular field of study, any research experience, your view of research and possible research interests, and personal goals. The essay may also address any of the following factors that are qualities that will be acknowledged in the admission process:
-
- Socioeconomic history
- Family background (including level of educational attainment)
- Personal talents, leadership capabilities, community service
- (Non-degree seeking students only) Statement of Purpose.
Determining Admission
The completed application is sent to the department of proposed study for an admission recommendation. The department looks at the following factors:
- Completion of the undergraduate prerequisites for the intended program
- The applicant’s previous academic record, which may include overall GPA, last 60-hour GPA, GPA in the major or in the prerequisite courses, and/or GPA in any relevant graduate work. GPAs are computed on all course work taken, including all grades on repeated courses.
- The applicant’s GRE/GMAT test score
- The essay
- Other criteria, as defined by the program
Degree-seeking applicants who submit a satisfactory essay, have at least a 2.5 overall undergraduate GPA (or 3.0 in the last 60 semester hours) and who meet the program's formula (and in some programs, additional criteria) will normally be awarded regular admission, resources permitting.
Degree-seeking applicants who fall slightly below the formula or GPA standards will be considered for provisional admission based on factors from the essay. If the department of proposed study decides that the applicant shows promise of succeeding in the program, based on these additional factors, provisional admission with conditions may be granted. No applicant who has a cumulative grade point average below 2.0 (computed from all undergraduate grades, including multiple grades for courses taken more than once) will be granted admission, whether regular or provisional.
Applicants who have not completed all prerequisites may be required to complete them before being considered for admission. In some programs, applicants may be admitted if they lack some prerequisites, but will be required to make up these undergraduate courses (leveling work) within the first year of their graduate enrollment.
Note: Admission as either a degree-seeking or as a non-degree student is granted by the dean of the College of Graduate Studies upon the recommendation of the department of proposed study. Only students who have submitted completed applications will normally be considered for admission.
