Master Reading Teacher Certificate Description
The Master Reading Teacher certification program is designed for those who are interested in pursuing a career as a Master Reading teacher. In addition to possessing a Texas Teacher Certificate, they must also take and receive a successful score on the Master Reading Teacher ExCET. Persons pursuing a Reading Specialist degree can apply the courses to their Masters of Education. Scheduling of these courses will conveniently accommodate the student who is already employed in the school system with evening and weekend classes as well as summer sessions.
Master Reading Teacher Certificate Requirements
- A four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- A Texas Teacher Certificate or equivalent
- The Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
- An application essay of no more than 500 words
- An overall undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 2.5 (including all grades on repeated courses) or a GPA of at least 3.0 in the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate work (including all grades on repeated courses) or a GPA of 3.0 or better in six or more graduate-level semester credit hours taken in a graduate degree program in a discipline relevant to the graduate program in Educational Diagnostics.
- A minimum score of 1500 from the formula: (undergraduate GPA) X 200 + GRE Verbal + GRE Analytical Writing Conversion (AWC) for Regular admission. Please call the Graduate Office for the GRE AWC.
Master Reading Teacher Certificate Coursework
Individuals seeking to fulfill the Master Reading Teacher Certificate (MRT) must hold a valid Texas Teacher Certificate; complete the courses listed below, and receive a passing score on the Master Reading Teacher ExCET. With regular admission to the graduate program, these courses can be applied to the Reading Specialist degree.

Students planning to take the Master Reading Teacher ExCet exam will need to complete four required graduate level reading courses and have had three years of teaching experience.
