Testing Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to take the GRE or GMAT?

Your planned area of study will dictate whether you need to take the GRE or GMAT. Students planning to enroll in programs in the College of Business may take either the GRE or the GMAT; however, the Accounting program requires the GMAT and the following programs require the GRE:

  • Animal Science
  • Biology
  • Business Administration
  • Physical Therapy
  • Industrial/Organizational Psychology *
  • Applied and Counseling Psychology *

* Required if undergraduate GPA is below a 3.0

Do I take the General GRE or Subject GRE Exam?

Those who need to take the GRE should take the General GRE.

What is the best way to study for the GRE or GMAT?

Get sample exams for the GRE or the GMAT. Learn how to take the test so you can concentrate on test questions when you actually get into the exam. Useful sites are Peterson’s and The Princeton Review.

How high do I need to score on the GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS?

ASU does not have set scores that you have to make on the GRE or GMAT exams. The scores are considered along with your overall undergraduate GPA, your last 60 hour GPA and your essay.

For international students, there are minimum score requirements on the TOEFL/IELTS exams. Scores cannot be more than two years old, and all programs except physical therapy require these minimum TOEFL scores:

  • Paper and pencil test: 550, with at least 55 on each of the three parts
  • internet-Based Test: 79, with at least 20 on each section

A score of 7 (with a minimum of 6.5 on each part) is ideal for the IELTS.

Can I get provisional admission without submitting GRE/GMAT scores with my application?

While exceptions can be made on a case by case basis, those programs which require the GRE/GMAT test will need at least unofficial scores to process the application.

What happens if I get accepted provisionally and then do poorly on my GRE or GMAT exam?

When you were accepted provisionally, you were accepted into the College of Graduate Studies and not a specific program. Once we have evaluated your GRE/GMAT scores, you will then either be accepted or denied admission into a specific program.
