Internship Program

History 4371

The internship program provides advanced history students with a practical learning experience outside of the classroom. The arrangement is mutually beneficial to the students, who gain pre-professional training, and the participating organizations that receive volunteer help.

The participating organizations are the West Texas Collection and Fort Concho National Historic Landmark. Duties assigned to interns will reflect as closely as possible the work of professional staff. Students gain experience in such areas as preservation and restoration of historic artifacts, archive management, museum operations and education.

Application

An internship application should be submitted in the form of a letter to the head of the History Department. At minimum, the letter should contain the applicant’s current GPA, cumulative semester credit hours and a statement of the applicant’s serious intent to fulfill the internship during the following long semester.

Selection

History faculty members will select interns during the semester prior to the proposed internship term. Interns must be history majors who have filed degree plans and would normally be seniors during the internship. Other students may also be considered, depending on applicants.

Interns will receive three semester credit hours in advanced history. These hours must be applied as elective credit beyond the 30 semester credit hours required of history majors.

Work Requirements

Interns will work a minimum of 100 hours during the internship semester. Students will be required to complete and submit semi-weekly, one-page internship reports to both the relevant professional supervisor and the department head.

Final Grade

At the end of the semester, interns will write and submit a 3,000-word report evaluating the semester’s work. Professional supervisors will evaluate the interns. The department head will determine a grade based on the semi-weekly reports, the student paper and the evaluation submitted by a professional supervisor.
