The history department recently received the following testimonial from Rachel Bell Lewis (2006), who is presently pursuing graduate work in urban planning and global information systems at the University of Akron in Akron, in Ohio: "ASU's history department offered a selection of diverse and interesting classes, but it was the style of teaching that attracted me to it. I would hear people from other schools talk of only having graduate students teach their classes; some never even met the actual professor, but at ASU I never had a graduate student teach any of my courses. Class sizes were always small enough that the professor knew my name, and I was able to get extra help whenever I needed it. The department emphasized training students for the future, and it prepared me very well. I decided to attend graduate school in a field that was quite different from history, but I was able to jump right in and keep up with students who had been studying the subject since their freshman year. Now I am readying for an internship this summer, a position that most students do not obtain in their first year. I gained much from my experience at ASU (and particularly from my study in the History Department) including developing friendships, and not just with the students, but with the faculty and staff. Everyone was always so friendly and willing to help you, and that's not something students can get just anywhere."
