Honors Program

Carry Forward Program

Honors students receive exclusive admittance into the Carry Forward Program, which helps them identify their intellectual and interpersonal strengths and determine what they want to do after graduation. Dedicated Honors staff members help them reach their career goals, including graduate school, professional school or placement in a competitive job field. Over 90 percent of our Honors graduates have entered a graduate or professional school program.

First Year Students

All new Honors students meet one-on-one with the Honors Program Officer during their first semester in the program to get better acquainted and to identify personal and professional goals. The officer will recommend activities the students can do to help further define their goals. This may include exploring career fields and job opportunities, degree programs, or graduate and professional schools through the Career Development Center. The officer may also suggest job shadowing, internship or professional mentoring resources.

Returning Students

Honors students meet annually with the Honors Program Officer to review their previously identified objectives and goals and to establish new ones. As the students progress toward graduation, the officer may discuss timelines for preparing for and taking graduate or professional school examinations, preparing a resume, applying for internship opportunities or preparing portfolios for prospective jobs. The officer may also recommend ways for the students to get more involved in campus activities or suggest leadership positions for which the students may be eligible.

Graduate Candidates

During the fall semester of their graduating year (or previous spring semester if graduating in December), Honors students may each apply to undergo a final interview conducted by a committee of faculty and staff identified by the student and chosen by the Honors Program Director. The committee will assess the student’s achievements while at Angelo State University and will then write a composite letter of reference for the student to use in job applications or applications to professional or graduate schools.
