Honors Advantage Program

Developed as the result of a cooperative agreement between the Texas Tech Honors College and the Angelo State University Honors Program, the Honors Advantage Program offers select ASU Honors students the opportunity to apply for early acceptance to the Texas Tech University Health Science Center (TTUHSC) School of Medicine or an early decision to the Texas Tech University School of Law.

Pre-Medicine

Eligible pre-medicine students will be allowed to waive the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test) and apply early to the TTUHSC’s School of Medicine, typically in their junior year. Early acceptance is available to an Honors student within any major, as long as the medical school entry requirements are met and the student is judged to be an exceptional candidate by the medical school Admissions Committee in the circumstances under which he or she applies. Successful applicants are notified of their acceptance in February and must complete their baccalaureate degrees prior to admission to the TTUHSC School of Medicine.

The primary goal of this special program is to encourage Honors students to broaden their educational experiences before they enroll in their professional studies. The waiver of the MCAT allows students to include coursework or other experiences in areas such as languages, the humanities, mathematics and business, enabling them to become more well-rounded professionals.

Pre-Law

Honors students who are eligible for the Honors Advantage Program and interested in going to the TTU School of Law can receive an early decision of their acceptance during their junior year. Students must be in good standing in the Honors Program, have at least a 3.5 undergraduate GPA and have an LSAT score that places them in the top half nationwide. Students will apply during the fall semester of their junior year and must commit to enroll at the TTU School of Law if they receive and accept an early decision.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Honors Advantage Program, a student must:

  1. Have a 1300 SAT (combined verbal and math) or 29 ACT composite score.
  2. Enter the ASU Honors Program as a high school graduate who has not matriculated into any other college following high school graduation.

Honors Advantage BENEFITS

Honors Advantage students receive the benefit of extra mentoring and guidance from ASU faculty, pre-medical and pre-law advisors, and Honors Program staff. The goal is to provide opportunities for leadership, shadowing and internship experiences, special symposia and conferences, and undergraduate research that will enhance an early application package.
