Germany - Education 2008
The 2008 German Education Program will provide professional growth opportunities for 20 teachers and prospective teachers. This is a unique opportunity for the participants (a) to visit a country which practices European style education, (b) to study the organization and administration of the educational system of Lüneburg, Lower Saxony, Germany and to compare this system with the educational system in San Angelo, Texas; and (c) to directly study the teaching practices and student services provided in the schools of Lüneburg and to compare these with the teaching practices and student services provided in the schools of San Angelo, Texas.
The 2008 German Education Program is being offered as a component of the student and faculty exchange program between Angelo State University and the Leuphana University of Lueneburg that was established in March 1991 and initiated with the exchange of teacher education students in 1993 and 1994. This agreement was revised and extended in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006.
Students will travel to Lüneburg and study at the Leuphana University of Lueneburg. Lüneburg, a city of 80,000 inhabitants in the German state of Niedersachen, is located 30 miles south of Hamburg, a thriving seaport of 1.8 million on an inlet to the North Sea. Lüneburg offers ASU students the quality of life of a smaller community without sacrificing the cultural resources and activities of a large metropolitan city.
Students will register for two courses that will feature classes on the Angelo State University campus followed by four weeks of classes in Germany. The carefully planned sessions at ASU will introduce students to the major themes of study and provide extensive orientation for living and studying abroad.
Excursions to Hamburg, Frankfurt, the Rhein River, and Copenhagen (Denmark) will be included to provide students with the greatest educational opportunities and to enhance the students’ learning experience.
