Courses
You will be required to enroll in two courses at ITESM for six hours of Spanish credit. After completing a placement test administered by ITESM, you will be placed in the appropriate level courses based on your level of proficiency. Transfer course credit will be determined by the beginning level of proficiency, progress, and completion of all course requirements.
Check with your academic advisor to determine how these courses can be used in your degree plan.
Five one-hour classes consisting of grammar, exercises, culture, listening and conversation will comprise the program. The students will earn six hours transfer credit for non-advanced Spanish (2 courses from 1301, 1302, 2311, 2312). With special requests, students at the advanced level may request credit for advanced Spanish (3314 - Advanced conversation and/or 4381 - Special topics), provided they agree to do a term paper in addition to the course work at the advanced level in Chihuahua.
These six hours will not meet residence requirements because they are taught in Chihuahua, not on the Angelo State University campus. Textbooks and other source materials will be used. While in Chihuahua, and for the duration of the program, students will attend class five hours a day Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, they will have class for 4 hours, and will have museum visits for two hours. Lunch will be served on campus each class day.
Each student will be required to register for six hours of Spanish to be taught by ITESM faculty members. Students will also participate in afternoon recreational (cost extra), commercial, industrial, and cultural visits in Chihuahua , provided by the ITESM staff and/or faculty members. This approach will allow students to learn about the city of Chihuahua and its culture.
Weekend excursions, at an extra cost, may include:
- Creel (to visit Cusárare Waterfall, Lake Arareko and the Sierra Tarahumara)
- Cuauhtémoc (to visit the Mennonite Museum, a cheese factory and a swing factory)
- Hidalgo del Parral (to visit the Pancho Villa Museum, the Alvarado Palace, the Hidalgo Theatre and other points of interest)
- Paquimé (to visit the Museum of the Cultures of the North and the Archaeological Ruins)
- Lago Colina (This lake was formed by the construction of the Boquilla dam. It has an extension of 24 square kilometers and has hosted national waterskiing tournaments)
- Guanajuato (to visit the historical sites of this colonial town)
- Zacatecas ( to have a city tour which includes a ride in the cable cars, a visit of the Cerro de la Bufa and historical downtown, and an archaeological tour that includes visiting La Quemada and Chimostoc and the regional museum)
