International Education Programs
Angelo State University recognizes the importance of preparing our students to be effective leaders and contributors to society. As a part of our commitment to this goal, it is our belief that students must be knowledgeable about our global environment. As stated in the Angelo State University Mission Statement "to educate students for living and working in a competitive global society."
More than ever, American students now recognize the importance of study abroad in a globally interdependent world. In the first full academic year after the 9/11 attacks (academic year 2002/03), the number of U.S. higher education students receiving credit for study abroad increased sharply by 8.5% from the previous year, reaching a record total of 174,629, according to Open Doors 2004, the annual report on international education published by the Institute of International Education (IIE). Since 1991/92, the number of students studying abroad for credit has more than doubled (from 71,154 to 174,629, an increase of 145%). Directives from the federal government call from more emphasis on the promotion of study abroad opportunities by encouraging more young people to come to America as exchange students; strengthening support for foreign language learning at all levels; and new beginning efforts to make sure that international education is an integral component of U.S. undergraduate education.
Angelo State University offers a number of opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students students to study abroad. Traditional programs include the following basic options.
- Summer semester abroad programs directed by ASU faculty
- Academic term study abroad programs at foreign institutions with formal exchange agreements
- Specialized programs with member institutions of the Texas Study Abroad Consortium
