Department Organization and Committee Structure
Governance of the Mathematics Department at Angelo State University is based upon an organizational structure consisting of an Executive Committee, Tenure and Promotion Committees, a Director of Developmental Mathematics, and four Area Coordinators. Additional ad hoc committees will be established for specific needs by the Executive Committee.
Executive Committee
Membership: The Executive Committee will consist of the Department Head and those members of the department faculty who- are currently full-time members of the department;
- hold the rank of Associate Professor or above; and
- have been full-time members of the department for the previous five years.
Fuorum: At least two-thirds of the Executive Committee must either be present to vote, or have cast their vote in absentia, in order for a motion to be considered.
Functions: The Executive Committee shall establish policies critical to departmental governance. In particular, the Committee shall have final authority in all departmental matters involving
- personnel;
- faculty assignments, including scheduling;
- budgets;
- academic programs, including curriculum, textbook selection, and program assessment; and
- student affairs, including recruitment, advising, and student organizations.
Tenure and Promotion Committees
The membership and function of the tenure and promotion committees are specified in the Faculty-Staff Handbook and the Departmental Procedure for Faculty Promotion (attached).Director of Developmental Mathematics
The Director of Developmental Mathematics shall be responsible for general oversight of the developmental mathematics program. Duties include- maintaining a thorough knowledge of all State and University policies affecting the developmental program;
- keeping the developmental faculty informed with regard to policy and procedural changes;
- making recommendations for improvement of the program;
- advising and placing students in appropriate developmental activities;
- preparing the necessary forms and informational materials;
- coordinating diagnostic testing and THEA preparation sessions; and
- conducting developmental program assessment.
Area Coordinators
The four Area Coordinators shall be responsible for organizing and coordinating Departmental activities in their respective areas. They shall report to the Executive Committee.The Library Coordinator shall:
- serve as liaison to the library;
- maintain information on library holdings for mathematics;
- coordinate suggestions for book and periodical purchases; and
- make recommendations to the Executive Committee on the use of the library budget.
- oversee the middle school teacher certification programs;
- stay abreast of state certification requirements;
- coordinate preparations for the TExES; and
- study and make recommendations to the Executive Committee regarding the middle school certification program and its curriculum.
- oversee the secondary teacher certification program;
- stay abreast of state certification requirements;
- coordinate preparations for the TExES; and
- study and make recommendations to the Executive Committee regarding the secondary certification program and its curriculum.
- serve as liaison to publishers;
- maintain information concerning the continued availability of current textbooks; and
- coordinate the study and recommendation of textbook selection through ad hoc faculty textbook committees.
