Modern Languages
The Department of Modern Languages offers bachelor’s degrees in French, German and Spanish, with teacher certification available in each area of study. Courses in Russian and linguistics are also available, and the learning experience does not end there. Our comprehensive academic programs help students develop an informed appreciation of languages, literatures and cultures while acquiring skills in critical thinking, effective writing and oral communication.
Extracurricular Groups
Students are encouraged to join any of the department’s four student organizations that embrace foreign languages and cultures. The department also offers free student tutoring to anyone seeking more foreign language support.
Technology-Rich Environment
Students attend class in “smart classrooms” equipped with the latest technology to accommodate everything from student laptops to multimedia presentations by professors. Technology is also used to help students see accurate representations of other cultures.
Committed Faculty
Our committed faculty members guide undergraduate students in understanding the issues involved in approaching another culture through the language of that culture. Many are involved in research and writing for publication. Faculty members also make themselves available to students outside of class for various activities, such as weekly Coffee and Conversation sessions that provide students and the community with informal settings for practicing and developing foreign language proficiency.
Career Opportunities
Having a global perspective is becoming an increasingly valuable credential, and the field of careers requiring foreign language skills continues to grow. Our department helps prepare students for careers in both the private and public sectors in business, education, health care and public service. Some students continue their education in graduate, medical or law school.
