BSN Clinical Experiences
One BSN course includes a clinical practicum in either traditional or community-based settings.
NUR 4106 Community Health Nursing Practicum
NUR 4106 Community Health Nursing Practicum includes 45 clock hours and provides the RN student an opportunity to provide care for a community. Appropriate clinical agencies include the following: public health departments, schools, rural community health centers, community clinics, nursing centers, adult day care, WIC clinic, and many others. The clinical experience involves a community assessment and an implementation project which will involve the student in a variety of clinical experiences outside of the agency itself. This practicum is taken concurrently with NUR 4307 Community Health Nursing.
These clinical experiences can usually be completed in the student’s city of residence, under the supervision of a qualified preceptor provided that a contract of association can be negotiated between the clinical agency and the university. The university must have a Contract of Association with a particular agency before you can begin working with a preceptor. The first step is to identify possible clinical agencies in your community that would be appropriate for the course. We encourage you to communicate with the nursing faculty member(s) who will be teaching the course - as you identify potential agencies and preceptors. We can help you determine the appropriateness of an agency or preceptor for the specific clinical objectives of each course. Sometimes it may be necessary for faculty to make the initial contact with the agency on your behalf. It is the faculty’s decision whether or not a clinical site will be adequate to meet course objectives.

The student is responsible for determining if a clinical contract with the preceptor’s clinical facility is on file in the department office. A list of clinical agencies with an established, current Contract of Association in place with the university is available online and updated regularly (from a link in the left hand margin).
For instructions on how to request that a Contract of Association be initiated with a clinical agency, refer to the link Clinical Contract Instructions on the Current Undergraduate web page. Please keep in mind that sometimes this process can take up to 3 months.
At the beginning of each semester, you will be required to submit a signed Preceptor Agreement to your clinical instructor. A copy of the Preceptor Agreement as well as all of the guidelines and requirements that govern your relationship with a preceptor and clinical agency can be found in the Preceptor Handbook.
