LVN-RN General Information
The ASU Department of Nursing and Rehabilitation Sciences offers two choices for licensed vocational nurses seeking an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (A.A.S.N.) degree.
The deadline for both of the LVN-RN programs is May 15 for entry into the July program. All applications will be reviewed by the admission committee after the deadline, and applicants will receive written notification by June 5. for July admission. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. Students are admitted on a competitive basis.
Please call the College of Health and Human Services at (325) 942-2630 or e-mail us at chhs@angelo.edu for more information.
Traditional Program
The traditional LVN-RN program offers a combination of online and on-site classes. The transition course is completely online with lectures, case studies and discussion groups. Upon successful completion of the transition course, students will matriculate into the remaining courses held on campus (Maternal-Child Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Management, Jurisprudence, and Advanced Concepts in Adult Health).
Hospital Affiliate Program
The LVN-RN Hospital Affiliate Program offers accelerated mobility through the curriculum. Unique features of this model include:
- A 50-percent decrease in time of completion
- Demonstration of competency in the areas of maternal-child, pediatric and mental health nursing through examination
- Didactic content delivered and evaluated through a blending of online and printed study modules
- A capstone clinical experience focusing on complex nursing care
Students who currently work at affiliate hospitals will need to contact their hospital about its specific affiliate agreement with the ASU nursing program. Students who are not currently working at an affiliate hospital must obtain approval at an acute care hospital willing to sign an affiliation agreement and provide an approved clinical preceptor. The Department of Nursing and Rehabilitation Sciences currently holds clinical affiliations with these facilities.
Please note that clinical hours can only be performed in an acute care facility.
Admission, Progression and Graduation
All students must submit the LVN-RN Transition Program Application, copy of current CPR card, immunization form, background check and drug screening* and insurance card to be considered for admission. All students must have a Texas LVN license and be current residents of Texas.
NOTE: All applications received after June 1, 2011, will be required to provide a TEAS V score. ACT/SAT scores can be used only for applications received prior to June 1, 2011.
Traditional LVN-RN program students must meet the requirements outlined in the Admission, Progression and Graduation documentation. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. Students are admitted on a competitive basis.
LVN-RN Hospital Affiliate Program students must also meet the requirements outlined on the Admission, Progression and Graduation documentation. The hospital affiliates may have additional admission requirements. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. Students are admitted on a competitive basis.
Prior to admission, applicants must secure a preceptor and a proctor from an affiliated hospital. The proctor is responsible for administering the NLN specialty exams on site. Preceptor requirements include:
- RN, A.A.S.N. or higher with an unencumbered license, and practicing direct patient care in an acute care area (ICU or step-down units preferred)
Applicants will not be considered for admission into the program without a completed and signed Preceptor Agreement from the potential preceptor. The Department of Nursing and Rehabilitation Sciences will not secure preceptors for applicants. Read the LVN-RN Preceptor Information to learn more.
Preceptors may only supervise one student at a time.
