Financial Aid for Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) Students
While a graduate degree is a wise investment for your future, we realize that many expenses, including tuition, fees and books, are associated with a graduate education. Several programs are available at ASU to assist you in financing your graduate studies.
Financial Assistance Through the College of Graduate Studies
For information related to Carr Graduate Scholarships and Graduate Assistantships/Teaching Assistantships, visit the ASU Graduate Financial Aid Web page.

Financial Assistance Through the Nursing Program
To be considered for financial assistance through the nursing program, you must have been accepted to both the College of Graduate Studies and the nursing program. Below are details about a variety of programs available to M.S.N. students.
Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship Program (AENP)
A traineeship will pay all or part of the costs of the tuition, books and fees of a program of advanced nursing education – and the reasonable living expenses of the student during the period for which the traineeship is provided.
The number of available traineeships varies depending on the total amount of funding received by the Department of Nursing and Rehabilitation Sciences for the program, the number of hours a student is enrolled in per semester, and the number of students applying for traineeships.
Under the AENP, support is limited to a maximum period of 36 months. Support for part-time study is limited to a maximum period of 12 months for students completing their last year of study.
Students must apply/reapply for a traineeship at least four weeks prior to each long semester. Students receiving a traineeship will be required to reimburse the university if they withdraw from the graduate program.
To apply for a traineeship, complete the Graduate Nursing Financial Aid Application and submit it to the Department of Nursing and Rehabilitation Sciences. The department head and graduate advisor will make final decisions on traineeship recipients.
Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP)
The Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Bureau of Health Professions, which allows nursing schools to make low-interest loans to their students who are enrolled full time in advanced degree nursing programs, and who intend to teach in a nursing program after graduation.
An NFLP loan can cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, lab expenses and other reasonable direct educational expenses. Loan recipients who complete the M.S.N. Nurse Educator Option may cancel up to 85 percent of the loan in exchange for service as full-time faculty at a school of nursing. To be eligible to receive an NFLP loan, a borrower must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or national of the U.S.
- Be either a full-time or part-time student in good standing in an advanced nursing education program at ASU
- Have no judgment liens entered against him/her based on the default on a federal debt, 28 U.S.C. 3201 (e)
To apply for an NFLP loan, complete these steps:
- Complete the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Complete the Graduate Nursing Financial Aid Application and submit it to the Department of Nursing and Rehabilitation Sciences.
- Complete the Nurse Faculty Loan Program Application and submit it to the Department of Nursing and Rehabilitation Sciences.
The department head and graduate advisor will make the final decision on loan recipients.
