New Requirements in the 2005-2007 Bulletin

Changes have been made in the requirements for “statistics and research methods.” Formerly, students satisfied the requirement by taking Psy 3305. However, this course is replaced by Psy 2321, beginning in the 2005 fall semester.

Students who are using an earlier Bulletin for their degree plan (2003-2005 or before) and who have not yet taken Psy 3305 can substitute Psy 2321 for Psy 3305, which will not be offered again after the 2005 summer session. An important consideration for those who substitute Psy 2321 for Psy 3305 on their degree plan: Psy 2321 is a lower-level course and does not count toward the required 18 advanced credit hours in major!

Registration for Classes and the Advisement System

At Angelo State University (ASU), students receive advisement from faculty about the degree requirements and then they register for courses. While the registration system is the same for all students, regardless of their major, the advisement system differs from one academic department to another. The purpose of this document is to familiarize students who are psychology or sociology majors about the advisement and registration systems in this department. The advisement procedures vary slightly for the different registration periods, so it is necessary to understand the calendar of registration periods at ASU.

Angelo State University has two "continuous registration periods" per year. They begin about the tenth week of a long semester and run until classes begin the next semester. In other words, students begin registering for summer and fall classes in March of the preceding spring. They begin registering for spring classes in early November of the preceding fall. Clearly, it is to the students’ advantage to register for their courses earlier rather than later in these extended registration periods, because many of the psychology and sociology courses become “closed” (reach full capacity).

To register, students must have their Registration Access Code (RAC) cleared. Freshmen, sophomores, new students, and new transfer students must see an advisor, who will then clear their RAC. Students who have completed enough credit hours to be classified as “junior” or “senior” (60 or more credit hours) will automatically have the RAC cleared. They are free to register for classes at the first opportunity. It is assumed that these advanced students know the requirements based on having a “degree plan” and/or from visits with an advisor on previous occasions. In other words, advisement is optional for students classified as juniors or seniors (those who have completed 60 or more credit hours), and it is mandatory for all other students

How Advisement Works

Students are assigned an advisor on the basis of the first letter of the students’ last name. The list of last-name letters covered by each faculty advisor is presented below in the “Question & Answer” section. During registration periods, students can sign up for an advisement appointment on the door of their assigned faculty advisor. During the appointment, which usually lasts about 15 minutes, the advisor will clear the student’s RAC.

Answers to Commonly-Asked Questions

Q: Am I required to see an advisor before registering, and if so, who?
A: Juniors and seniors are not required to see an advisor, but are welcome to do so. Freshmen, sophomores, and entering transfer students are required to meet with their advisor prior to registering for classes. The advisor will clear your access code and will give you an advising slip that lists recommended classes for you to take.

Advisors are assigned according to students' last names as listed in the table below.

Q: Can I get into a "closed" class, and if so, how?
A:

The courses have limits on their enrollment based on room sizes, fire codes, and/or specific aspects of the way a particular course is delivered. Once a class reaches its enrollment capacity and becomes "closed", students are only let in under exceptional circumstances:

You must be a graduating senior majoring psychology or sociology and the class must be one that fulfills a requirement other than "elective",

OR

You will be eligible to graduate within the next semester or the one following, and you must have the course to fulfill a requirement, but the course will not be offered again before you graduate.

(Note: If another course will meet the requirements and will be offered before you graduate, then you DO NOT meet the criteria.)

If you qualify under either of the circumstances above, the instructor will complete a "closed course approval form" for you to submit to the Registrar's Office.

Q: How do I drop a class?
A: You should get a drop slip from the class instructor and take it to the Registrar's Office, but in the event your instructor is not available, then you may get a drop slip from the department head or the secretary. The last day to drop a course and receive a grade of "W" is approximately two-thirds of the way through the semester or summer session. The exact date of the "W" deadline is published in the Class Schedule each semester. After the "W" deadline, students cannot drop courses. The "W" does not affect grade point average.

Q: What do I need to do if I’m a senior and plan to graduate at the end of the next semester?
A:
  1. When you register for classes, be sure to indicate that you are
    planning to graduate.
  2. If you register on the computer, complete the graduation application
form ONLINE. If you register by phone, go to the College of Liberal & Fine Arts Office (CARR 146) and complete a graduation application form.
  3. After you register for your classes, do an electronic "degree audit"
and verify that there are no classes in the section on "Academic
    Requirements Remaining."
  4. Be sure to take the MFAT exit exam at the end of the semester. You will receive a letter about it in the mail.
