Housing Info For New Students

Housing Newsletter for Discover ASU Participants: Living On Campus at Angelo State University

Welcome to Living & Learning On-Campus!

The Residence Halls play a special role in education and student development at ASU. By being more than a place to eat and sleep while attending college, the Residence Halls provide an opportunity for students to experience a sense of community with shared commitment and social responsibility. We encourage you to round out your university experience by getting involved in the many activities and learning opportunities available to you as a residential student. Involvement in campus activities and events is a proven indicator of a successful college career. Living on campus puts you right in the middle of the action, academically and socially!

The following information is intended to provide you answers to frequently asked questions about making your housing arrangements on campus as an incoming ASU student. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have as you get started on planning your first year with us!

We also suggest you check our web page frequently for updates and to check out new on-line services that we expect to have available later in the spring!

  1. How do I apply for housing on-campus? OR What if I have already applied for housing?

    To Apply: 3 Easy Steps

    • Apply for Admission to ASU. Get your CID.
    • Visit our web page to Apply On-line for housing at ASU.
    • Send your payment for the $50.00 non-refundable application fee and $150.00 housing deposit to the Residential Programs office.

Applying for Housing is separate from applying for admission to ASU. Before you apply for housing, you should first apply for Admission to ASU. After Admissions receives your application, you will be issued a campus ID (CID) number. You will need this CID number when you go on-line to apply for housing. You can find the Apply On-line link on our department’s main web page.

If you have already applied for housing, but did not use the Apply On-line application, check the room/roommate selection schedule for information about when you should log in to MyHousing (see our web page) and update your Personal Preferences information, check your room selection lottery date(s) & times, etc.

After you have applied for housing, if your plans to attend ASU change, you must submit a written request to cancel your housing reservation. If you cancel by July 15th, you will receive a refund of your housing deposit. If you cancel after July15th, your deposit will be forfeited.

  2. Can I choose my roommate or will one be assigned to me?

With our new on-line services, you have the option of choosing your room and/or roommate or letting the system match you based on information you provide about your preferences. There are deadlines and some eligibility restrictions, so please carefully read the confirmation documents that you can print out when you apply for housing. They are also available on our web page under News & Updates.

PLEASE NOTE: If you decide to select a room or roommate yourself, you are choosing to bypass the Personal and Room Preferences information you entered. As such, you will NOT be alerted to possible conflicts i.e. smoking versus non-smoking status. Unless you are choosing to room with someone you already know, we STRONGLY encourage you to opt for auto-assignment so that your Personal and Room Preferences can be factored in to your assignment.

If you don’t have a specific person in mind, don’t panic! The majority of our students don’t, and so they are assigned a roommate. In the new on-line system, you will have the opportunity to log-in to our web site and enter some general information about your room and roommate preferences. This information will then be used in an auto-assignment process where the system will attempt to match as many of your preferences as possible.

We put a lot of effort into providing you as many options as possible, but please understand that it isn’t always possible to honor every request. Please also keep in mind that like all other relationships, roommate relationships are based on a lot of subjective and intangible elements. There just aren’t any guarantees that your roommate situation will be totally conflict free. What we can guarantee you, is that we will be here to help you work through any roommate issues that may arise. Of course, we can’t help if we don’t know you need it, so please let us know when you need our assistance.

  3. Are you expecting a housing shortage for Fall 2008?

With Centennial Village scheduled to be open for Fall 2008, we are NOT expecting a housing shortage at this time. Concho Hall will be used to accommodate any overflow / temporary housing in hopes that it will not be necessary to triple assignments (add a third person to a double room) in other buildings. However, decisions about if and when to triple, how much to triple etc. are made as we are able to gauge demand for housing.

Students who are assigned to overflow housing at Concho Hall will be charged the Centennial Village fall room rate initially. Their accounts will be adjusted / pro-rated when they are assigned to a permanent assignment.

If something in the housing situation changes from what we are projecting at this time i.e. there are significant construction delays at Centennial Village, enrollment growth exceeded expectations for the fall, etc., then we would of course make adjustments to accommodate as many students who want to attend ASU as we can. We encourage you to check our web page regularly for announcement regarding assignments, triples, construction updates, We will also be providing updates during the summer orientation (SOAR) sessions.

  4. How much will it cost?

Proposed room and board rates for 2008—2009 are available on our web page under the "Cost" navigation link on the left hand side of the main page. We think you will find that our rates are competitive and there are a range of affordable options available to you.

    A word about your contract.

Your housing contract is an ACADEMIC YEAR (August—May) contract. It is a legally binding contract so please review it carefully for complete terms and conditions.

  5. What does "tripling" mean?

When a room is "tripled" it means that we have assigned one more student to the room than it would normally have. i.e. a two person (double) room would have three people in it. "The triple" is the term for the student in the room who has the latest application date and is therefore the temporary or third person in the room. "The triple" is the student who will be reassigned as space becomes available. All the students in the room are tripled, but only one is THE triple. All students in tripled rooms receive a prorated credit back to their accounts for any days that they are in a "tripled" assignment.

  6. Am I required to live on campus?

Single undergraduate students with less than sixty (60) semester credit hours of college level work who enroll at ASU and carry a total of 12 or more semester credit hours at ASU and who do not live at the full-time established residence of their parent(s) are required to reside in University-owned housing. Requests to commute from a parental residence from a distance of more than 100 miles must have approval from the Office of Residence Life. The following categories are eligible for a Standard Exemption to this policy upon making a written request and/or submitting the appropriate documentation to the Office of Residence Life:

The following categories are eligible for Standard Exemption to this policy upon making a written request and/or submitting the appropriate documentation to the Office of Residence Life:

    • I have lived on campus for 4 or more long (Fall /Spring) semesters.
    • I am or will be 21 years of age prior to the start of the 2008 Fall semester.
    • I have or will have 60 or more earned semester credit hours prior to the start of the 2008 Fall semester.
    • I plan to enroll for less than 12 hours each semester during the 2008—2009 academic year.

Students not meeting any of the above exemption categories, who desire to live off campus, must submit a Special Circumstances Exemption to the Office of Residence Life. Special Circumstances requests require that you submit supporting documentation and can therefore take a little more time to review. Common examples of Special Circumstances Exemption requests include: Financial Hardship, Medical condition directly related to living on campus, Marriage, Dependents, Transfer students under 60 earned semester credit hours, request to reside with a parent, grandparent or sibling as well as "other" unusual circumstances.

Requests for exemption to the ASU Housing Policy must be submitted along with all supporting documentation on or before August 1 for the fall semester or December 15 for the spring semester. Incomplete requests are returned to the student along with instructions for completing the packet.

A University Housing Appeals Committee is available to review the decisions of the Office of Residence Life when an appeal is made by a student whose request for an exemption has been denied.

If a registration hold has been placed on your record, you will be unable to register for classes until a decision has been reached on your request for exemption. This means that if you submit your request for exemption late, on or near the deadlines dates, or incomplete, you may not be able to register for classes until the next registration period (this period may or may not be prior to the start of the semester).

You should not make off-campus housing arrangements until you receive WRITTEN notification from the Office of Residence Life that your request for exemption has been approved.

A student who gives false information concerning housing will be subject to disciplinary action, including possible suspension from the University. A student found to be living off-campus without approval from the Office of Residence Life will be notified through United States mail to move on campus. If this is not accomplished within ten (10) class days, the Director of Residential Programs will initiate disciplinary action.

Please contact the Residential Programs Office if you have any questions regarding the University’s Housing Policy requirement or the Exemption process.

    Exemption Request Deadline Reminder:
The deadline for submitting an exemption request and all supporting documentation for Fall 2008 is AUGUST 1st. We are happy to discuss your exemption request with you individually. Please feel free to contact us with your questions.
