Desk Assistant

Desk Assistants are important members of the Residence Life team. As prominent points of contact for students, staff members and guests, Desk Assistants are often the "first impression" people have of Residence Life. The Desk Assistant position involves interacting with students, faculty, guests and fellow staff members in a pleasant and professional manner, responding to questions and requests for information. Strong communication skills, a high degree of responsibility and a positive attitude required.

Students considering applying for a Desk Assistant position should be organized, reliable, and able to provide assistance with routine office functions. Desk Assistants are expected to be familiar with university and Residence Life policies and procedures. The Desk Assistant performs basic office related functions: typing, completing reports, performing basic word processing functions, filing, taking accurate messages, making appropriate referrals, providing explanation of university and Residence Life polices and procedures to students, guests, administrators and faculty. Attention to detail is a must! Desk Assistants are responsible for check-in and check-out of a variety of equipment in accordance with established departmental and Hall office procedures.

Desk Assistants are expected to monitor behaviors and security issues in their area of responsibility while on duty, taking appropriate action to correct problems. Desk Assistants must be willing to confront inappropriate behaviors and seek assistance from other staff members as appropriate. Desk Assistants must attend required training-typically held prior to the residence halls opening for semester check in.

COMPENSATION: Desk Assistants start at $7.36/hr. Approximately 20/hrs/week.

Student Office Assistant

The Residence Life Office looks for an organized, reliable student to provide assistance with routine office functions. The Student Office Assistant position involves interacting with our patrons and fellow staff members in a pleasant and professional manner, responding to questions and requests for information. Strong communication skills and positive attitude required. The Student Office Assistant performs basic office related functions: typing, performing basic word processing functions, filing, taking messages, making appropriate referrals, assisting with delivering mail etc. to other campus offices. We are looking for someone who is patient, self-directed and who understands when they need to ask for assistance and will do so. We will work around your class schedule.

COMPENSATION: Student Office Assistants start at $5.85/hr. Approximately 20/hrs/week.

Resident Assistant

Resident Assistants (RA's) are an integral part of Residence Life. They are the staff members who have the most direct and constant contact with students. Their primary responsibility is to act as facilitator for the development of a sense of community in the residence halls and to enhance the social, educational, spiritual, intellectual, physical, cultural and environmental development of each of their residents. The RA articulates for students the philosophy and policies of Housing and the University. RA's represent housing and act as role model for students.

The six basic roles of the RA are:
  1. Community Facilitator
  2. Referral Agent
  3. Team Member
  4. Administrator
  5. Educator/Events Planner
  6. University Representative

COMPENSATION:
Level 1 (first year RAs): $661.60 monthly stipend
Level 2: $680.00 monthly stipend
Level 3: $720.00 monthly stipend

Levels 2 & 3 are competitive positions open to RAs after completing one full year as a Level 1 RA. Level 2 & 3 RAs have some additional responsibilities. Advancement to Level 2 or 3 will be based on application and evaluation of performance, initiative, teamwork at the Level 1 position.

RA's enjoy the advantage of a single (private) room at the special RA room rate of $1,250.00 per semester ($2,500 per year), regardless of which residence hall they are assigned to. RA room charges are billed at 50% for Fall and 50% for Spring. RA's are subject to existing meal plan requirements.

Webpage Assistant

The Residence Life Office looks for an organized, reliable student to provide assistance with maintaining and upgrading the department's web page. The Student Web Page Assistant will work with the Director of Residence Life on the design and maintenance of the Residence Life web page. This position involves interacting with others in a pleasant and professional manner, responding to questions and requests for information, quick and accurate completion of tasks assigned. Good communication skills and positive attitude required.

In addition to previous web design / maintenance experience, the Student Web Assistant must have familiarity with the following applications / technologies:

We are looking for someone who is very detail oriented, deadline conscious, self-directed and who understands when they need to ask for assistance and will do so. We will work around your class schedule.

COMPENSATION:
$11.00/hr. Approximately 15/hrs/week.

Summer Conference Assistant

JOB SUMMARY:

The conference assistant will work under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Residential Programs and under the day-to-day supervision of the Area Coordinator. The assistant will be involved in servicing the housing, meeting, and recreational needs of the conference groups within the residence halls.

JOB DUTIES: REQUIRED SKILLS: COMPENSATION:

$7.36 per hour. Room compensation for the Summer Session worked. Summer Session I: May 12-July 3, 2008. Summer Session II: July 5-August 12, 2008.

PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: May 12, 2008 - August 12, 2008 (subject to change)

A normal work week is 30 hours. During the summer the Front Desk work hours range from 6:00 am to 1:00 am depending upon the needs of our guest. Work hours will be based on three normal shifts: morning, afternoon and evening depending on our workload and the number of groups on campus. Each conference assistant (CA) will work a variety of shifts throughout the summer. Weekly staff meetings are mandatory, even if they fall on a scheduled day off. You must be 16 years of age or older to apply. Applicants must be high school seniors enrolled in college for the fall or current college students.
