Meal Plans

More than a place to live

Between classes and activities, you will have enough to keep you busy without adding cooking meals to the list. A campus meal plan makes it easy. With expanded service hours and a variety of food options available, the hard part is choosing what you want to eat.

Your dining service is managed by Chartwells, a division of Compass Group North American Inc., a nationwide food service firm that works with college administrations and students to provide a variety of nutritious menu options combined with personalized service for a pleasant dining experience.

For more information please visit the Chartwells ASU Dining Services Web site. If you live in a residence hall and have completed fewer than 60 semester credit hours, purchasing a meal plan is required. Meal plans are optional for students assigned to Vanderventer Apartments and for all summer housing residents.

Types of Meal Plans

Each Meal Plan includes $50 in RamPoints.

RamPoints are a feature included in the cost of the Meal Plans that allows you to make $50 in direct food purchases at the cafeteria, the UC Snack Bar, Outtakes convenience store at Centennial Village and the Super Slab. To make a purchase using your RamPoints, simply present your ASU OneCard to the attendant and say you would like to use your RamPoints. The attendant will swipe your card and the amount of the purchase will be deducted from your account.

RamPoints vs. Ram Bucks
RamPoints Ram Bucks

Part of the meal plans. Only people who purchase a meal plan have RamPoints.

All currently enrolled students have an active Ram Bucks account. To use the account, they need to add value (make a deposit). They can add value in the OneCard Office in the Administration Building using cash, check, money order, MC or VISA. They can also add value using cash at the CSVT machines.

They can be used only for food purchases in the cafeteria, at the Super Slab and in the UC Snack Bar.

Ram Bucks can be used for food purchases at all locations, for snack and beverage purchases in selected vending machines, to activate the laundry machines in the residence halls and VV, for color laser printing in the MCS computer lab, to make photocopies, and for purchases at the ASU Bookstore.

Unused RamPoints do not roll over to the next semester.

Unused Ram Bucks carry forward from semester to semester as long as the student is enrolled.

RamPoints that have not been used when a student leaves the university are not refunded.

When a student leaves the University and has a balance of $5 or more, he/she can submit a written request for refund.

The meal specifications at ASU are designed with balanced nutrition in mind, but it is the students' responsibility to choose items that create a healthy diet according to their individual needs.

Do the Math

ASU Meal Plans offer value for your dollar. Students have unlimited buffet-style access to a wide variety of food choices. On a price-per-meal basis, you won’t find a comparable nutritional alternative.

Here is the math:

  • Meal Plan A totals about $2,500 a year and provides 20 meals a week for roughly 32 weeks. At that rate, food comes out to $3.91 per meal.
  • Meal Plan B totals about $2,450 a year and provides 15 meals a week for roughly 32 weeks. At that rate, food comes out to $5.10 per meal.
  • Meal Plan C totals about $2,400 a year and provides 15 meals a week for roughly 32 weeks. At that rate, food comes out to $5 per meal. Keep in mind that with this option, you only have access to the dining facilities Monday-Friday.

Transferability

Chartwells offers “transferability” for all meal cardholders in the Snack Bar and Super Slab. This transferability is worth a specific amount of money toward food purchases in the non-resident operations. Transferability allows greater flexibility for the meal card holder. This option is limited to the specific hours listed under “Meal Transfer Hours.” Chick-fil-A and Blimpie are excluded from the transferability. However, you can use your RamPoints to purchase products from those vendors.
