Desk Assistants
Desk assistants are important members of the Residential Programs team. As prominent points of contact for students, staff members and guests, desk assistants are often the first impression that people have of Residential Programs. The desk assistant position involves interacting with students, faculty, guests and fellow staff members in a pleasant and professional manner and responding to questions and requests for information.
Strong communication skills, a high degree of responsibility and a positive attitude are required. Students considering applying for a desk assistant position should be organized, reliable and able to provide assistance with routine office functions.
Desk assistants are expected to be familiar with university and Residential Programs policies and procedures. The desk assistant performs basic office-related functions, including typing, completing reports, basic word processing, filing, taking accurate messages, making appropriate referrals and providing explanations of university and Residential Programs policies and procedures to students, guests, administrators and faculty. Attention to detail is a must.
Desk assistants are responsible for check-in and check-out of a variety of equipment in accordance with established departmental and residence hall office procedures. Desk assistants are expected to monitor behaviors and security issues in their areas of responsibility while on duty and take appropriate action to correct problems. They must be willing to confront inappropriate behaviors and seek assistance from other staff members as needed. Desk assistants must attend required training typically held prior to the residence halls opening for semester check-in.
Compensation
Desk assistants start at $7.36 an hour (about 20 hours per week).
Qualifications
Students applying must meet these requirements:
- Maintain a 2.25 cumulative GPA.
- Be available to work weekend and evening hours.
- Be able to operate a personal computer and perform basic word processing and data entry tasks.
- Have great organization skills and be detail-oriented.

Student Office Assistant
The Residential Programs Office looks for organized, reliable students to provide assistance with routine office functions. The student office assistant position involves interacting with our residents and fellow staff members in a pleasant and professional manner as well as responding to questions and requests for information.

The student office assistant performs basic office-related functions, including typing, basic word processing, filing, taking messages, making appropriate referrals and assisting with delivering mail and other items to campus offices. We are looking for people who are patient, self-directed and understand when to ask for assistance. We will work around class schedules.

Student office assistants start at $7.36 an hour (about 20 hours per week).

Program Assistant
The Residential Programs Office hires energetic and motivated students to serve as Program Assistants (12 positions are available). These positions assist with and support a broad range of programming (events and activities) in the residence halls across campus. Program assistants help with the research, design, creation, coordination, marketing and implementation of programs based on departmental goals for student retention, academic success and community development.
Students must be prepared to be positive role models for all campus residents. They should be creative, flexible and prepared to plan and attend various events and programs offered on campus. Students should also be able to motivate and encourage fellow residents to attend campus events.
Program assistants play an important role in the development of a sense of community in the residence halls and in enhancing the social, educational, spiritual, intellectual, physical, cultural and environmental development of residential students.
Compensation
Program assistants receive a stipend of $640 a month. Time demands for this position may vary and include some nights and weekends. Because of the flexible nature of this job, we discourage outside employment responsibilities. Other employment may be allowed, but is subject to approval.
Qualifications
Students applying must meet these requirements:
- Live in university housing. They are not required to reside in any specific residence hall and residents of all buildings are encouraged to apply.
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Be enrolled at ASU for at least 12 credit hours each semester of employment for undergraduates. Graduate students should take nine hours each semester of employment.
- Begin training two weeks prior to the residence halls opening in the fall and about one week prior to the halls opening for the spring semester. Attendance at training is mandatory.
- Be able to operate a personal computer and perform basic word processing and data entry tasks.
- Work as a positive, productive team member. Idea-sharing and teamwork are a must.

Program Assistant II
The Residential Programs Office seeks energetic and motivated students to serve in Program Assistant II (PA II) positions. These positions will assist with and support a broad range of programming in the residence halls across campus. The PA IIs will assist with the research, design, creation, coordination, marketing and implementation of programs based on community needs.
In addition to these duties, the PA IIs will be required to hold office hours for a minimum of 10 hours per week, assist the coordinator of Enhancement Programs with administrative duties and conduct program assistant staff meetings in the absence of the Enhancement Programs coordinator.
Students must be prepared to be positive role models for all campus residents and should be creative, flexible and prepared to plan and attend various events and programs offered on campus. Students should also be able to motivate and encourage residents to attend campus events.
Compensation
Program Assistant II positions receive a stipend of $640 a month and the cost of their room is waived. The hours expected of a PA II will vary according to the needs of the community. Due to the time demands of this position during various parts of the semester, working additional jobs may be subject to approval.

Resident Assistant
Resident Assistants (RAs) are an integral part of Residential Programs. They are the staff members who have the most direct and constant contact with students. Their primary responsibilities are to help facilitate a sense of community in the residence halls and to enhance the social, educational, spiritual, intellectual, physical, cultural and environmental development of each resident.
RAs articulate for students the philosophy and policies of Residential Programs and the university. They represent Residential Programs and act as role models for students. The six basic roles of an RA are:
- Community facilitator
- Referral agent
- Team member
- Administrator
- Educator/events planner
- University representative
Level One RAs are first-year RAs. Levels Two and Three are competitive positions open to RAs after completing one full year as a Level One RA. Level Two and Three RAs have some additional responsibilities. Advancement to Level Two or Three will be based on application and evaluation of performance, initiative and teamwork at the Level One position.
Compensation
Monthly stipends: Level One, $661.60; Level Two, $680; Level Three, $720.
RAs enjoy the advantage of a private room at the special RA room rate of $1,250 per semester ($2,500 per year), regardless of which residence hall they are assigned. RA room charges are billed at 50 percent for fall and 50 percent for spring. RAs are subject to existing meal plan requirements.
Qualifications
Students applying must meet these criteria:
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Be enrolled at ASU for at least 12 credit hours each semester of employment (for undergraduates). Graduate students should be enrolled at ASU for nine hours each semester of employment.
- Completed a minimum of 24 semester credit hours by the date of employment.
- Have a minimum of two semesters of group or community living experience by the date of employment.
- Be free of disciplinary probation.
Other requirements:
- RAs are not allowed to be employed in any position outside of Residential Programs (on or off campus) at the same time they are working as an RA. This is due to the availability requirements inherent with the RA job.
- RAs are required to begin training two weeks prior to the residence halls opening in the fall. Attendance at training is MANDATORY for all RAs.
- RAs are required to stay a day or two after the residence halls close at the end of the semester and academic year to complete required administrative responsibilities.
- RAs are required to attend scheduled spring semester in-service training sessions. The in-service training schedule will be provided prior to spring registration.

Summer Conference Assistant
The conference assistants will work under the general supervision of the associate director of Residential Programs and under the day-to-day supervision of an area coordinator. The assistants will be involved in servicing the housing, meeting and recreational needs of the conference groups within the residence halls.
Job Duties
- Attends staff meetings and training sessions.
- Prepares residence halls for the summer (distributes pillows, blankets, etc).
- Performs check-ins (inspects rooms, distributes keys and linens, prepares and processes check-in forms, etc).
- Performs check-outs (collects linens and keys, processes paperwork, inventories linens, damaged and missing items, etc).
- Checks meeting room set-ups. Delivers, sets up and removes audio-visual equipment when necessary.
- Assists custodial staff with housekeeping.
- Gives tours and serves as resource person for conference attendees.
- Assists groups during their activities, as necessary.
- Anticipates conference needs and problems. Takes or recommends action as appropriate.
- Enters detailed activity reports in daily activity log throughout each shift.
- Prepares residence halls for the approaching academic year (including the preparation of room condition reports).
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Compensation
The summer conference assistants are paid $7.36 an hour. A room cost waiver is offered for the summer session worked. There are two summer sessions, each lasting about eight weeks.
Period of Employment
A normal work week is 30 hours. During the summer, the front desk work hours range from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m., depending on the needs of our guests.
Work hours will be based on three normal shifts: morning, afternoon and evening, depending on workload and the number of groups on campus. Each conference assistant will work a variety of shifts throughout the summer. Weekly staff meetings are mandatory, even if they fall on a scheduled day off.

Web Page Assistant
The Residential Programs Office looks for an organized, reliable student to provide assistance with maintaining and upgrading the department's Web page. The student Web page assistant will work with the director of Residential Programs to keep the Web page updated.
This position involves interacting with others in a pleasant and professional manner, responding to questions and requests for information, and quick and accurate completion of tasks assigned. Good communication skills and a positive attitude are required. In addition to previous Web design/maintenance experience, the student Web page assistant must have familiarity with these applications and technologies:
- Adobe Acrobat
- Dreamweaver
- Adobe Photoshop
- HTML
- Java Script
- Web programming (PHP, Perl, CGI) preferred
We are looking for someone who is detail-oriented, deadline-conscious and self-directed and who understands when he or she needs to ask for assistance. We work around class schedules.
Please note that this position will require a great deal of self-directed work. A project schedule will be developed with the director. Weekly meetings will be scheduled to check and evaluate progress and establish new or additional objectives for the Web page.
