Graduate Admission

The instructions below are for United States residents only. International students will have additional requirements.

Admission Requirements

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 2.75 or better, including all grades on repeated courses – OR – hold a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or better in the last 60 hours of undergraduate work. Required GPA may be waived on a case by case basis by the department head.
  • At least two letters of recommendation
  • An essay of no more than 750 words discussing an important issue of national or homeland security
  • The GRE test is not required for admittance to the programs

How to Apply

  1. Complete the Graduate Admission Application.
    Note: If you pay the $40 fee before you submit your application through the website, you will not have to mail in your payment or make a payment in person. Students are advised to pay their application fee through Apply Texas before they submit their application.
  2. Submit an essay of no more than 750 words. The essay can be submitted within the Graduate Admission Application, through e-mail to graduate.studies@angelo.edu, or by fax to 325-943-2194.
    • Border Security Essay Topic: An issue the applicant believes is important in the field of homeland security. References may be cited in footnote format.
    • Criminal Justice Essay Topic:  An issue the applicant believes is the single most important challenge to 21st-century criminal justice written in endnote or footnote format. References may be cited in footnote format. Outside sources may be used.
    • Intelligence, Security Studies, and Analysis Topic: An issue discussing an intelligence-related topic affecting our nation’s security.
    • Security Studies Essay Topic: An issue the applicant believes is important in the field of national security. References may be cited in footnote format.
  3. At least two letters of recommendation must be submitted by the persons providing the references. The forms and letters should be sent to the College of Graduate Studies (mailing information is available on the form).
  4. Mail official transcripts from all colleges attended to the College of Graduate Studies. Transcripts should be mailed to:

  5. Your admission decision letter will be e-mailed to you at the address entered in your admission application.

Transfer Credit

A maximum of nine semester credit hours of graduate course work completed in a regionally accredited institution may be transferred toward the master’s degree in Border Security, Criminal Justice, or Security Studies. Transfer credits cannot be applied to graduate certificates in Border Security and Security Studies. Official transcripts showing the successful completion of the courses petitioned to be transferred must be on file in the College of Graduate Studies. No graduate work for which the student received a grade lower than “B” will be accepted for transfer credit. No graduate work which was part of a degree awarded at another institution will be accepted for transfer credit. All transferred course work must have been completed no more than six years prior to the awarding of the master’s degree at Angelo State University. Approved transfer credit will be awarded after the student has successfully completed one semester or term of graduate enrollment. Department Head Dr. Robert Ehlers can provide a recommendation for transfer credit to the graduate dean at the student’s request. For more information, please contact the department head.
