How to Use the Testing Center

**Remember, no cameras, phones or electronics are allowed at computer testing units.

**Do NOT be afraid to ask for HELP if needed!

**Make sure you understand if your instructor has set the testing program to:

  1. “go back,” “review” or “change responses” before attempting to do so.
  2. allow for single-attempt answers or for multiple attempts.
  3. calculate an immediate exam grade. Fill-in-the-blank and essay questions will not be automatically graded.

**Before you begin, you must have your ASU ID name and password to access the exam through the Blackboard Course Management System.

**The monitoring staff will NOT have access to your ID or your exam!

**For nursing exams, the staff monitor will be able to answer some questions, but generally, the course faculty will need to give the final answer.

**A phone number to the course faculty is generally available to the monitor for major issues.

Steps to Using the Testing Format

The Blackboard introduction screen should be visible. If it is not, please contact monitor.

  1. Sign into Blackboard using your ASU ID and ASU password.
  2. Click on the course in which you are taking the test.
  3. Click area on the left side (button side) of screen that is for “testing.” (Some instructors have listed the exam under “assignments.”)
  4. When the test name pops up, click on it.
  5. When a secure password is displayed, click the “ok” button on right upper side of screen.
  6. Click again on  “submit” in upper right corner of screen.
  7. The test should be displayed. If not, contact the monitor or faculty present.
  8. When a question pops up, read it and answer by clicking the mouse over the correct dot space. [NOTE: Some items will require more than one response to each question. SELECT ALL THAT APPLY if there is more than one answer.]
  9. If it is a fill-in-the-blank question, be careful with spelling and decimal points if numbers are needed. (Follow directions for rounding issues when answering math questions.)
  10. Each testing item (answer) must be accepted by clicking on the “>” symbol to progress to the next question. A secure box will pop up to ask if you are ready to move on. Accept this response by clicking “yes.” [NOTE: If you click the double arrows “>>,” this will move you to the end of the exam. This feature is not normally used unless reviewing the exam.]
  11. Repeat No. 8 until all questions are answered.
  12. When all answers are completed, you will click “submit” at the bottom of the exam to send your responses to the instructor. [NOTE: Some tests will allow a review of the exam and others will not, based upon the instructor's programming of the exam.]
  13. To close the program, click the large “X” in the red box at the top of the screen.
  14. When the question box comes up, answer “no” to closing the secure browser.
  15. If the instructor has programmed an automatic grade and no essay was included on the exam, the number of correct items will be displayed. If the program does not automatically score the exam, your grade might be obtained through the “Course-Gradebook” section in Blackboard once grading is completed.

**If you accidentally close down the secure program after taking the exam, the staff monitor can correct this for the next testing individual.

**If you kick the plug out or the monitor suddenly shuts off, DO NOT PANIC. The exam is not lost and by simply re-plugging the lines, the test will resume.

For error messages, please contact the room monitor.

DO NOT TURN THE COMPUTER OR THE SCREEN MONITOR OFF!
