Course Credit for Military Service

Joint Services Transcript through the American Council on Education

The Joint Services Transcript is now the official tool for Army, Marine Corps, Naval, and Coast Guard personnel that validates and documents the recommended college credits for professional military education, training courses, and occupational experience of service members and veterans.

This unified and standardized document makes it easier for institutions to review and articulate these credits as appropriate to service members and veterans degree programs.

Have your JST transcript sent to ASU to be evaluated.

Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) and Air University Transcripts

House Bill 269

Angelo State University awards course credit for military service in accordance with House Bill 269. Within the terms of this legislation, you can choose up to 12 transferable hours of available military service credit to apply toward your degree plan. ASU evaluates students on a case-by-case basis and may award additional credits for those who have more than 12 hours of transferable credit.

The Military Service Credit option is available to veterans who graduated from a public or private high school accredited by a generally recognized accrediting organization – or from a high school operated by the United States Department of Defense. They must also meet at least one of these requirements:

  • Honorably discharged from the U.S. military, or
  • Completed a minimum of two years of service in the U.S. military and have been discharged as a result of a service-related disability

In deciding whether to claim this credit, students should consider:

  • The impact of the credit on their eligibility for a tuition rebate
  • The possibility that they could be charged additional tuition if they have excess credit
  • The possibility that they will be ineligible for Texas B-On-Time loan forgiveness (refer to the university catalog for additional information) if they have excess credit

To have the credit awarded, you must provide to the ASU Office of Admissions proof of eligibility (i.e., DD214 or disability discharge documentation) and a military educational credit evaluation based on American Council on Education (ACE) Guide recommendations. Once approved, the appropriate amount of elective credit will be added to your official academic record.

Please note that your selection of Military Service Credit is irrevocable once you have made your decision, so careful consideration should be given to the total effect of the additional course credit on your degree progress and in regard to other institutional rules.

Once you have decided that you would like to accept either three, six, nine or 12 semester hours of elective credit, please contact your academic advisor or the department head of your major to schedule an appointment for advising. If you have chosen not to declare a major at this time, you will need to meet with an academic advisor in the Freshman College, located on the third floor of the Porter Henderson Library.

If you have any questions or concerns, contact the Office of Admissions at 325-942-2041 or e-mail us at admissions@angelo.edu.
