Writing Center Staff
Director
Cynthia Burkhalter
My name is Cindy Burkhalter, and I am currently the Interim Director of the Writing Center. I also teach half-time in the Department of English, assisting with the Developmental Program. My educational background includes a B.S. and M.S. in Psychology from Texas A&M University and an M.A. in English from Angelo State University.
My experience with the Writing Center goes back to the early 1990s when I actually worked as a tutor. As an instructor, I also consult with the tutors in the Writing Center whenever I suggest that my students visit the Center.
Because I love the challenge of helping students become better writers, I thoroughly enjoy teaching and my time in the Writing Center. I also enjoy reading, gardening, quilting, painting, and most outdoor activities. Spending time with my family, especially my grandchildren, is the high point of any day.
The tutors who work in the Writing Center are students and skilled writers themselves; they have a sincere desire to help other students become confident, resourceful writers. Without reservation, it has been my experience that students who utilize the services of the Writing Center do benefit.
Writing Center Coordinator
Katie Jones
Greetings! My name is Katie Jones, and I am elated to be the new Writing Center coordinator.
I received my bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Texas at Austin, and taught high school English for 12 years in the Austin area. I recently received my master’s degree in English from Angelo State University, and I have taught English composition courses at ASU the past two years.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, traveling, visiting art museums, going to see local bands and cooking. I am also an avid Texas Longhorns fan, and I enjoy going to see the San Angelo Colts play baseball.
I encourage you all to come to the Writing Center. The tutors are skilled and accomplished writers who are happy to help you improve your writing and become more confident writers. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, and I know your tutoring sessions at the Writing Center will yield positive results.
Graduate Assistants
Heather Wylie
My name is Heather Wylie. I am a San Angelo native and a Graduate Assistant tutor for the Writing Center. I graduated from Angelo State in 2010 as a double major in History and English. Now, I am pursuing Masters degrees in both History and English.
In my free time, I enjoy reading any and all genres. I also enjoy watching movies and spending time with my friends and family.
I look forward to seeing y’all at the Writing Center!
Alexandra Hopkins
Hello! My name is Alex, and this is my second year as a peer tutor at the ASU Writing Center. I just graduated in May of 2011 with my Bachelor’s degree in English. I am now a graduate student working toward getting my Masters in English. I am also a Graduate Assistant this semester and have the privilege to shadow a professor in an ENG 1301 class. My goal is to one day get my PhD in English and become a college professor.
I really enjoy reading, cooking, watching movies, and spending time with my husband and family. I am very involved in school activities, classes, and studying. I am also the Vice President of the English Department’s Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta. Literature and English are very important to me, so anything that involves books makes me happy.
Here at the Writing Center, I am very eager to help you find your inner writer and improve your writing style and techniques. Please stop by, and let’s see what we can do together.
Courtney Goff
Hi! My name is Courtney Goff, and I am excited to be a Graduate Assistant in the Writing Center this year. I graduated in May 2009 from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin with a bachelor's degree in mass communications, and I am currently pursuing my master's degree in English here at ASU.
I am married, and we have a six-year-old son. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I love to cook, exercise, and of course, read!
I look forward to seeing you all in the Writing Center soon!
Anna Arreola
Hello and good day! My name is Anna Grace Arreola, and I’m excited to be working as a Graduate Assistant in the Writing Center this semester!
I completed my undergraduate degree in the English with secondary teacher certification program here at ASU in May 2011. I’ve enjoyed reading and writing just about my entire life. I particularly enjoy reading and writing poetry and fantasy; someday I would love to be involved with writing, editing, and publishing children’s books. Before that happens (Lord willing!), I would like to teach at the high school or college level or work with other collegiate writing centers.
My interests include my husband and my home (we’re newlyweds!), reading and writing (as before mentioned), making creative projects (baking, cooking, arts-and-craftsy stuff), learning Spanish, and enjoying nature.
I truly enjoy helping people learn to improve their writing skills. After all, no one is born knowing how to write! Please come on by and see us, and we would be most happy to help you!
Casey Ferguson
My name is Casey Ferguson. I was born and raised in Abilene, TX, and have been a proud resident of San Angelo for the past five years. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English from ASU and am in my second year of work towards my Masters degree, currently working as a Graduate Assistant in the English department. Ultimately my goal is a PhD in English Literature so that I can teach at the university level.
I’m married to my best friend and am absolutely in love with my daughter, who turned three months old at the beginning of the fall semester. There’s nothing I appreciate more than a cup of coffee on a morning when I have nothing I have to get done, and in my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my family, including our two pups, and watching movies with my wife.
Please come by the Writing Center and see us. We’d love to help you find your rhythm and confidence as a student.
Sarah Privert
Hello! My name is Sarah-Joel. I recently graduated from Angelo State with a B.A. in English with French and political science minors. Now I am a graduate student in the English Department here at ASU.
I am from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, but I have been living in Texas for a little more than six years. I fluently speak three languages (French, Creole and English). My favorite things to do when I am not in school are to travel, read cheesy novels and practice tennis.
I am looking forward to my first year working in the Writing Center!
Chris Hinds
My name is Chris Hinds, and I am a second semester graduate student in the English department. This will be my first semester in the Writing Center. I am originally from Modesto, California, and I moved to San Angelo when I was eleven years old. I graduated from Texas Tech University in December of 2010, and I am currently working toward a Masters of Arts at Angelo State University. This December, my wife and I will celebrate our three year anniversary. I am excited about the prospect of working in the Writing Center at Angelo State University and look forward to helping you with your writing needs.
Peer Tutors
Amanda Hill
Hello, hello. My name is Amanda (typically shortened to Manda) Hill, and I’ll be beginning my foray into tutoring this year, while I work on receiving my degree in English. I’ve finally settled on Mass Media as my choice of a minor and would love to explore the realm of video editing.
I’ve loved language since childhood, and I’m a sucker for an excellent fiction novel, regardless of its supposed reading level (For instance, A Tale of Two Cities is equal in quality to The Voyages of Dr. Doolittle. Well, Dr. Doolittle may be better. It does have talking sea snails, after all). Some favorites would include J.D. Salinger, Kurt Vonnegut and literature, in general, that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
While I love writing and reading, my life revolves around music. I love singing, improving on guitar, attending loud shows, and listening to just about any genre I come across.
I look forward to helping you out in the Writing Center this semester and hope you take advantage of the resource that it is!
Regan Wilson
Hello! My name is Regan Wilson. I recently graduated from Colorado State University with a B.A. in English and a concentration in Creative Writing. I moved to San Angelo, TX, to be with some of my family and begin graduate school here at Angelo State University. This is my first year as a graduate student and also my first year as a tutor in the Writing Center. I anticipate learning as much from my tutee’s as they learn from me, and I am confident that we will all become better writers together.
In my free time I play outdoors, listen to jams, write poetry, and find inner peace from things such as Yoga and reading a good book.
I look forward to meeting all of you!
Hattie Campbell
Hello, my name is Hattie Campbell. Currently, I am a senior at Angelo State University majoring in English with a Communication minor. Prior to becoming a full-time student, I worked with a telecommunications company for 25 years. I am excited to be a Writing Center peer tutor.
I enjoy reading, singing, socializing, and football.
I would like to spend a little time conveying to each of you the enormous amount of help the Writing Center provides. As a non-traditional student, I found the Writing Center to be instrumental in developing my writing skills. The center is open to all students, and I encourage you to take advantage of this student aid. I look forward to working with you.
Kayla Butler
Hi, my name is Kayla Butler. I am a junior English major with Secondary Certification. My minor is psychology. This is my first year as a peer tutor in the Writing Center, and I am looking forward to it.
I love to relax with my family and friends, watch movies, and read. I hope to be a high school English teacher in a small school someday soon.
I'm excited to see you in the Writing Center! Come by sometime, and I'll do my best to help you become a better writer!
Cayla Clinkenbeard
Hi! My name is Cayla Clinkenbeard, and I'm a senior English major with a philosophy minor. After I graduate, I hope to go to graduate school for philosophy. I also tutor students in philosophy, so bring on the philosophy essays! Nothing excites me like philosophy, and most people consider me to be a huge nerd on the subject.
Some of my favorite writers are Aristotle, Sextus Empiricus, David Hume, Immanuel Kant, Nietzsche (of course), Foulcault, Derrida, Virginia Woolf, Zizek, James Joyce, Simone de Beauvoir, and Fyodor Dostoevsky.
This is my second semester at the Writing Center, and I look forward to helping students learn writing skills.
Mackenzie Holik
Hi! My name is Mackenzie Holik, and I am a Graduate Peer Tutor in the Writing Center. I am a senior at ASU, and I will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Kinesiology this upcoming December. I was born and raised in the San Angelo area, but I graduated from Wall High School. I am a city girl on the surface, but a country girl at heart.
I am married to my high school sweetheart, and when I’m not swamped with school, I enjoy spending time with him, baking, scrapbooking, and organizing anything in sight. My nights are usually spent watching a movie on my couch with my wonderful husband and our sweet puppy, Remi.
I am so excited to be a tutor in the Writing Center because I want to help you all in your writing experiences! Come see us soon!
Susannah Barrington
Hello! My name is Susannah, and I am a peer tutor in the Writing Center. I am majoring in English with a minor in German. I love reading, writing, and helping other students learn how to be better writers. I have learned to be a better writer myself by working with the students who come into the Writing Center!
Some of my hobbies include origami and singing, but I spend the majority of my free time reading. I also enjoy watching TV, hanging out with my six siblings, and participating in church-related activities. I am a member of the Angelo State University Choir and look forward to performing Brahms’ “A German Requiem” at our concert in November.
I enjoy working in the Writing Center with all of these great tutors, and I hope you take advantage of this fabulous service. Hey, you already paid for it in your student fees, so you might as well reap the benefits! I hope to see you soon!
