The Horn Studio at Angelo State University is engaged in the best of all facets of performance on horn. Focus is on study of solo repertoire and ensemble performances.
Along with private, individual instruction, students on horn keep very busy. We have also brought in many of the best horn players in the country to perform with and mentor our students. Previously, we have sponsored members of the Symphony Orchestras of Dallas, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, San Antonio, Fort Worth, and Houston; there have been many well-known soloists and free-lance artists perform here in addition to our own ASU horn ensembles. As a matter of fact, the ASU Horn Ensemble was invited to attend the International Horn Society Regional Conference in Wichita, Kansas in 2006! Former students have found meaningful employment in the music field as educators, in retail, and as professional performers—one even earned a Grammy at the 2008 Awards Presentation!
The curriculum for horn students is rigorous. Emphasis is on embouchure, air/sound, technique, and musical development while learning the standard repertoire. Weekly lessons and regular studio classes are held to ensure successful growth on the instrument.
Many performance opportunities are available for ASU students. Recitals are frequently given by faculty, students, as well as guest artists. Students can choose from concert, pep, and marching bands, jazz ensemble, brass quintet, brass choir, trumpet ensemble, and other chamber groups. Pit orchestras support musical theater productions; recently members of the studio were featured in concert with the San Angelo Symphony Orchestra performing the orchestral masterpiece, The Pines of Rome.
