Grading is not a subjective, dart throwing exercise. The attached document is a guide for you to understand the reasoning
behind the letter grade you earn on your essays. Note that this document should be read in conjunction with the out of class grading document attached below. Obviously, these are general guidelines and the grade may be impacted by other requirements mentioned in an assignment and not on the attached sheet.

Out of class essays are graded for both content and mechanics. Quite simply, you must write cleanly if you want your reader to respect your ideas. Writing without regard for proper grammar and mechanics is akin to building a house with rubber nails and a paper hammer.
ASU Writing Center
The ASU Writing Center is an excellent resource for student writers. Trained peer tutors work in the Center to help ASU students and faculty improve their writing skills.
