Important Assistantship Information
The I-O program
currently has access to 4-7
(depending on the year)
assistantships that are awarded
to students in our graduate
programs each year. These assistantships are competitive and students
from every
ASU graduate program in Psychology
(I-O, General and Counseling) are eligible to apply.
At least one of these is a
graduate assistantship and at least two are research
assistantships. Both
types pay an hourly wage ($13.50 as of September 2008).
These are defined below:
Graduate
assistantships involve a 17.5
hour per week commitment to work in the department
(this is a maximum).
Some of these hours are spent staffing the Tutoring and Testing labs, while
others are spent assisting specific
faculty with courses. Grading, test preparation, and tutoring
are typical
task functions.
Research assistantships
involve a 19.5 hour per week commitment to support faculty research
(this is
a maximum).
These hours must be spent in research-oriented duties (data collection,
experiment design, writing, data analysis, etc.).
In addition, these assistantships carry an in-state
tuition waiver.
This means that out-of-state students will
be charged in-state tuition rates for that year.
If you are interested in applying for one of these positions, follow the steps below:
On your
application
you must check the box about graduate assistantships located on EACH
recommendation form.
Students are automatically considered for both types of assistantships,
so
there is no need to indicate a preference on
the application form.
Ask your references to directly mention the assistantship in their letters.
In your personal statement,
please spend some time commenting on your research background,
experience
that you have
in psychological research, etc. Also, do not be surprised if someone
phones
you for a quick interview. We use a
broad-spectrum analysis of your qualifications, not
just test scores or
GPAs.
THE EARLIER THE
BETTER! The faculty may award these assistantships (especially the research
type) as early as
February. If you wait, there may not be any left to offer you, irrespective
of your
qualifications.
