Internships in I-O
All I-O
students have the option of completing one of two capstone projects during their
time at ASU.
One option is to participate in a minimum 150-hour internship (called a practicum
in the formal ASU bulletin)
on-site in a local business. This internship
accounts for 6 of the 42 credits necessary for graduation.
To be eligible to
begin the internship, the student must:
Have completed 18 credit hours of work in the program, with at least 9 of those being I-O core courses;
Have selected and contracted with a business who has agreed to host that student.
Typically,
students will interview with local sites and work from September to April in the
same position.
If this is not feasible for
some reason, alternate models are available.
We have
special agreements with prominent San Angelo companies for year-long internships
(some paid)
each year. These positions are competitive and open to
all 2nd year I-O students.
The student is responsible for the following activities during the internship period:
A weekly report
documenting at least one experience of note for every 10 hours worked,
including
a description of the event, and reactions to it.
A mid-term evaluation
meeting with the internship supervisor to discuss their performance and
suggest improvements (if necessary).
A final practicum
paper, due two weeks after the completion of the clock hour requirement,
connecting
the tasks and experiences encountered during the practicum to the
psychological literature. This
paper will be assessed by the I-O faculty and
graded as pass/fail.
