The City of San Angelo
San
Angelo is a small metropolitan city in the heart of west central Texas.
Including the small communities
immediately surrounding the city, the population
rests at about 105,000. The city is located on the junction
of US 87, US 67, and
US 277, and is only 90 minutes from I-10 and I-20. The nearest large
metropolitan
areas are San Antonio (about 180 miles southeast) and the
Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex (about 225 miles
northeast). The city is also served
by its regional airport (Mathis Field) with service from American Eagle
(connecting in
Dallas),
connecting San Angelo to a wide array of other cities by air.
Some of
San Angelo's largest employers are Goodfellow Air Force Base, an intelligence
and firefighting
training center; Shannon Health System, operating a large
hospital and several clinics; San Angelo ISD,
which operates two high schools in
the city; Verizon; Angelo State University; SITEL, a national customer
service
call center; and Ethicon, a surgical supplies manufacturer and division of
Johnson & Johnson.
The climate in San Angelo is "warm and dry." We average about 18
inches of rain per year historically,
and the temperature can climb into the
100's fairly frequently during the summer. However, humidity is
usually low, so
it doesn't feel quite as bad as it sounds! Those who love the outdoors will have
a state
park to visit and Lake Nasworthy, where many San Angeloans go to
waterski and just have fun. The
people are very friendly and helpful -
volunteerism is a strong ethic in San Angelo and we believe in building
our
fellow citizens up for the good of all of us.
